Shadowkeep: Part 3

One more trip into Shadowkeep! In this episode we follow the party through their adventures conclusion and then we get coy about next weeks episode. Wink. Nudge. Also we talk about what we are playing this week and MORE! Actually, no not more, pretty much exactly what this description says.

00;00;00;05 - 00;00;05;17

Phil

Until it breaks and then we. Yeah, exactly. If we're going to switch, we'll, we'll throw in one of Uncle Keeler's commercials.

00;00;05;29 - 00;00;11;01

Kevin

Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know who else throws in commercials?

00;00;11;23 - 00;00;12;09

Phil

Who's that?

00;00;13;07 - 00;00;34;03

Kevin

Hey there, everybody. Welcome back to Pixelate. My name is Evan. With me, as always, is Phil. And today on the show, we are walking a tightrope, hoping by recording set setup style continues to work because it's given like 15 different errors over the past hour. So we'll see.

00;00;34;11 - 00;00;43;19

Phil

We'll see if this thing works. Fuck it up. But nothing will stop us from providing you people with quality content. We are going to talk about.

00;00;43;21 - 00;00;54;19

Kevin

Shadow Keep with is part three of our Shadow Cube series, the last part of our Shadow Cube series because my book fell apart. I only have half of it. I can't finish.

00;00;54;19 - 00;01;01;15

Phil

The book is Kevin's copy of Shadow Cave existed for exactly as long as it needed to.

00;01;01;17 - 00;01;05;00

Kevin

That's all the binding. The binding mystically dissolves.

00;01;05;01 - 00;01;15;11

Phil

It just. It just fell apart. The. The book shouted. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? And it was. And it is done. And it fell apart.

00;01;15;11 - 00;01;24;17

Kevin

Everything fell apart. I have nothing left. Nothing but shadow keep has ended again. And that's the end of that.

00;01;24;26 - 00;01;27;19

Phil

So all we have left are our memories of shadow.

00;01;27;29 - 00;01;33;20

Kevin

All we have left are memories of shadow. Keep gone by.

00;01;34;01 - 00;01;34;24

Phil

Yeah, yeah.

00;01;35;10 - 00;01;44;23

Kevin

So. Yeah. Anyway, so, Phil, if you could start us off with a little bit of a recap on what happens the last episode.

00;01;45;03 - 00;02;21;01

Phil

Have you read that You're Sweet Bippy I'll do that last episode we started with chapter five, where we encountered a pack of hungry goblins attacking a caravan of reptilian bipeds. We have a fascinating discussion about who our people really and and came to the conclusion that apparently goblins are not people while bipedal snake men are indeed people. So that happened.

00;02;22;05 - 00;02;31;29

Phil

Our hero Proctor killed his first person, took his first life, found that it was super easy but also super disagreeable.

00;02;31;29 - 00;02;32;24

Kevin

He was not that.

00;02;33;13 - 00;03;04;27

Phil

Deep down inside. And that brought us to chapter seven, where I read sorry, chapter six, where we are met with a caravan of people from Kep Basin, which is the the town that exists beneath Shadow Keep. Basically, people are evacuating. It is a full scale evacuation because apparently everybody knows that this demon is coming and we are not running into a lot of heroes going the opposite direction, which I found kind of funny.

00;03;05;05 - 00;03;05;22

Kevin

No heroes.

00;03;06;24 - 00;03;16;03

Phil

Yeah. We are introduced to Norrell, who is the innkeeper of the town of Kep Basin, who's the only person who stayed behind Big Man.

00;03;16;04 - 00;03;16;25

Kevin

He's a big, big.

00;03;16;25 - 00;03;17;21

Phil

Beefy old man.

00;03;17;21 - 00;03;19;19

Kevin

He's just a big, old, beefy man.

00;03;19;19 - 00;03;50;03

Phil

Big, old, big, old, big, old, beefy boy with his might meals and mighty meals for beefy boys. That's our brand and he's he was he's just he's he's what of weird I think might be the weirdest character in this book because his stance is basically that you know I'm an innkeeper I've been selling stuff basically. He's been selling his rooms to humans only because they happen to be the people who were passing by.

00;03;50;03 - 00;03;59;04

Phil

He has no problem with assisting demons who might need a room for a day or two or even 15 minutes. Of course.

00;03;59;04 - 00;04;02;16

Kevin

Hey, if you if you catch if you get your drifts there.

00;04;02;16 - 00;04;29;16

Phil

Yeah. Yeah. So it brings us to chapter seven, where they they've had a large meal with normal. And he proceeds to give us to this. Now we finish the book. I can positively say this was the weirdest part of the book. He gives Proctor, our protagonist, the weirdest sales pitch basically just walks him through all this stuff that has been left behind by Heroes.

00;04;29;16 - 00;04;39;23

Phil

I kept waiting for it to connect to something, and it never did. It was literally just this weird guy with with a what did you compare it to? It was the Glen Shadow.

00;04;39;23 - 00;04;40;28

Kevin

Glen. Keep it.

00;04;40;28 - 00;04;42;26

Phil

Right. Exactly. Yeah. Yes.

00;04;42;29 - 00;04;45;01

Kevin

Shadow Gary, Glen, Glen Keep.

00;04;45;09 - 00;04;50;23

Phil

Is just trying to sell land and multifaceted jewels to this young man.

00;04;50;23 - 00;04;54;11

Kevin

You know, it's the only thing they're not making any more of yet.

00;04;55;21 - 00;05;31;23

Phil

Demon opals. Yeah. And we that leads us to them finally leaving Norrell, leaving Kemp Basin and entering into shadow keep finally almost almost over halfway through the book through hook or by crook, they make their way in Merrill. What's your name again? Merrill Merrill's Merrill is basically earning her keep by knowing how to use riddles and figure her way through the puzzles that will get them in, that'll get them through this.

00;05;31;23 - 00;06;00;05

Phil

This continues through the book. She explains these feats to no one, thus keeping her importance to the party sound. I very weirded out by the fact that she is the only character seems to whisper to people, and we as the reader are left entirely in the dark. And this is where we're introduced to that trope. Finally, we get into chapter eight, where we get our first sight with somebody in the shadow.

00;06;00;05 - 00;06;07;21

Phil

Keep a group of faceless sub demons more than humans, less the devil. Never really.

00;06;07;21 - 00;06;09;00

Kevin

Describe. Never really.

00;06;09;00 - 00;06;37;21

Phil

They? Yeah, kind of just vaguely horrifying things. They do a lot of fighting slash running. Yeah. And and then we get into a lot of traps. Our roo friend proves to be an idiot on like a lot of of situations, like just setting one trap off after the other in rapid succession, never learning his lesson, never.

00;06;37;21 - 00;06;38;16

Kevin

Learned a lesson.

00;06;38;24 - 00;06;58;20

Phil

Never learning his lesson. And finally, the aid basically just makes it through through the goodwill of his friends and just a whole lot of luck, which seems to be his main start is luck. And then finally the chapter ends. It's he didn't put it in intelligence or.

00;06;58;20 - 00;07;00;22

Kevin

Luck was not the dump stat for him?

00;07;01;03 - 00;07;16;13

Phil

No, it was the only stat. And the chapter ends with them running away from a horde of angry trolls who are interested in consuming their flesh consuming their flesh. Just that is what it is.

00;07;16;13 - 00;07;19;06

Kevin

Slash consumption. That's. Yeah. You know.

00;07;19;23 - 00;07;25;24

Phil

It's good. It's the name of the game. Yeah. And that brings us to chapter nine of Shadow Keep.

00;07;26;04 - 00;07;40;00

Kevin

That brings us to chapter nine of Shadow Keep Ends in chapter nine. Basically, Chapter eight ended with shrapnel like screaming from another room or making a sound. And in Chapter nine, it's a false alarm. SARANDOS Fine.

00;07;40;24 - 00;07;46;02

Phil

Yeah. We don't get to see him horribly dismembered like we were all keeping our fingers crossed.

00;07;46;02 - 00;08;12;06

Kevin

And no, he's fine. He found a skullcap hidden behind some sort of clear crystal. Kind of. Their description of it almost makes me think of the, like, transparent aluminum from Star Trek, which is what they're with. The windows are made out of in Star Trek. It's not glass, it's transparent aluminum. So yeah, I was just reminded of that briefly.

00;08;12;06 - 00;08;43;07

Kevin

So they take turns trying to figure out how do we get get this, how do we have to figure it out? And Marilyn's like, Don't worry, guys, I got it. And she walks up to it. She, like, stares at it for a little while, and then her delicate little fingers, like, touch it. Right. And pops that bad boy right open and she gives the skullcap, which is made out of spun silver to protector who gives it to shrapnel because shrapnel saw it first and Strand tries to put it on.

00;08;43;07 - 00;09;00;11

Kevin

But he can't wear skullcap because he's a little kangaroo man. And he has big, big, big kangaroo ears, big ol floppy. They all floppy ears. This Randall gives it back to Proctor and Proctor puts it on and he's he's now protected from a direct blow to the head of according.

00;09;00;11 - 00;09;04;28

Phil

To make a point of saying like I guess it's better than just it's better than nothing and.

00;09;05;06 - 00;09;08;00

Kevin

Yeah, it's more protected than hair.

00;09;08;15 - 00;09;12;26

Phil

It really is. Level one final fantasy shit at that. Yeah.

00;09;13;15 - 00;09;38;21

Kevin

Yep. And is like you don't feel anything, you're not feeling a twitch. If anything, you're not dying or anything in practice like not moving on. So I know they go to, they find a practice is like, oh, that's a weird thing over there. And he walks over and they're like, what? These giant chest pieces that are out? And he said, No, the mirror with a hinge.

00;09;38;29 - 00;10;04;22

Kevin

And he opens up as me, you what's, what's he opens up a mirror because there's a big mirror and he opens it up and there's an iron vault door behind it. And basically they spend a good amount of time trying to figure out what the the what what is this? What's going on? And they're like, well, maybe it's a puzzle.

00;10;04;22 - 00;10;14;25

Kevin

Maybe we have to move the chess pieces around to solve it. And the chess pieces aren't actually there. They are just ethereal projections of chess pieces.

00;10;15;09 - 00;10;17;15

Phil

Which is a theme we run into a lot, run.

00;10;17;15 - 00;10;43;06

Kevin

Into it a few times, is like these are things that you see aren't actually there. So they can't touch the chess pieces and they're like, All right, well, we got to go. Like, we're not figuring this out right now. Serrano's like foot mum, and they continue on their merry way. And along the way, Merrill finds a stick. Try to stick.

00;10;43;21 - 00;10;44;14

Phil

Finds a stick.

00;10;44;18 - 00;10;56;29

Kevin

It looks like a stick strand and proctor like why? And she's like, it's it's got writing on it and it's got runes. It's got, it's got runes and I don't know the language so that's neat.

00;10;58;24 - 00;11;07;26

Phil

Which look, look, if I was a dungeon crawler, I'd be insufferable for that very reason. I'd be like, there's right. I think it's neat. I'm keeping it.

00;11;07;26 - 00;11;13;06

Kevin

It's, it's the Skyrim, you know, you just pick everything, just steal it all, pick it off.

00;11;13;06 - 00;11;16;09

Phil

Empty, empty body into backpack. Yeah.

00;11;16;09 - 00;11;23;25

Kevin

And yep. Exactly. Yeah. You just hitting ea for take all and you're not really. It's just learning what's on the body.

00;11;23;25 - 00;11;25;01

Phil

Yeah. I'll deal with it later.

00;11;25;01 - 00;11;28;21

Kevin

I'll pick that. I picked up the quest item. I didn't notice.

00;11;29;03 - 00;11;37;16

Phil

Right, right. Like, wait, I can't move. Why is it. Oh, I've got 97 leather vests.

00;11;38;09 - 00;11;44;23

Kevin

I'm being under encumbered is for cowards.

00;11;44;23 - 00;11;46;24

Phil

That's, that's playing true easy mode.

00;11;46;24 - 00;11;48;09

Kevin

My true easy mode.

00;11;48;09 - 00;11;50;23

Phil

You are actually being choosy on what you you are not.

00;11;50;28 - 00;11;56;05

Kevin

You want a man's game that'll put some hair on your chest, steal everything.

00;11;56;05 - 00;11;59;27

Phil

What? What kind of luxurious life you must have?

00;12;00;05 - 00;12;25;09

Kevin

Yeah. My Skyrim character carries the world on his back. So anyway. Yeah, where she finds the stick, it's kind of. It's kind of neat. And they move on, they get to a they basically reach the end of the hallway and there's just a black wall at the end. And it's just like it is so black. It's like vantablack, you know, they use you cannot see any.

00;12;25;09 - 00;12;33;09

Kevin

There's just they're like, well, what are we going to do? And her guard was like, Well, I didn't want to say anything but the trolls.

00;12;34;17 - 00;12;40;03

Phil

Yeah. Oh, God, I swear to God, man. Maybe, maybe. Speak up.

00;12;40;14 - 00;12;50;26

Kevin

It's like I didn't want to ruin the moments, but the truth did find their way through the the wall of flashing colors. And they're on the way. Yeah.

00;12;51;14 - 00;12;52;18

Phil

So we better move.

00;12;52;20 - 00;13;19;05

Kevin

So we better move. So, yeah, they they they decide to crawl. They, like, touch the black wall. It's another portal. So they're like, All right, we're going. And they end up in this room. It's, it's a circular room. And this scene was kind of neat because because of what happened. So it's a circular room in the center. There is a pool of murky water.

00;13;19;14 - 00;13;40;02

Kevin

Mm. With a stick. The sticks are a recurring theme here. It's actually it's actually more of a it's clearly more of like a walking stick. It's like the first thing she finds is looks like just just a branch or whatever. You snap off a tree. This looks like a an actual walking stick. It looks like it has purpose.

00;13;41;06 - 00;13;48;25

Phil

I have I they never described it as such, but I had it in my head that it was like a shillelagh or something like that. Yeah. Or something.

00;13;48;26 - 00;14;13;28

Kevin

Dick Yeah. It also has the writing, similar writing on it that the other stick has. And so they're like and there is a, there's opening in the ceiling leading to another tunnel that they can see. So they're like, All right, well, we're going to get across there and we're going to drop jump on her right shoulder, and then we're going to have to pull him up like plan, plan, plan.

00;14;13;29 - 00;14;33;18

Kevin

Okay. Right. They have to cross the mucky water to get there so they get in there. Practice goes in first and it is gross. It is it is algae filled, muddy swamp water and it's going up to his knees and he's just like, oh, as.

00;14;35;26 - 00;14;42;12

Phil

A screw up, like, oh, oh, this is worse than being chased by the trolls.

00;14;42;28 - 00;14;45;19

Kevin

This is worse. Can we go be eaten by the trolls now?

00;14;45;20 - 00;14;47;06

Phil

Yeah, that sounds better.

00;14;47;15 - 00;15;09;17

Kevin

That does sound better. So they continue along and they're like, All right, well, let's get the stick while we're here. Meryl is really showing Skyrim in ingenuity and it's like, let's pick it all up and nobody can move it except Hard Road. So Hard Ride goes and gives it a tug, rips it out, and they're like, All right.

00;15;09;24 - 00;15;42;06

Kevin

And then a claw comes up out of the water and nearly bisects her. GRODD Just the vivisection right in the middle of the of the murky water. He gets out of the way because he's Superman and of course is the fastest reaction of all time. And there is a monster. They back up. And this monster is it's it is kind of disgusting looking the way he described it.

00;15;42;16 - 00;15;51;19

Kevin

It's it has there's like no neck. It is just this fleshy eyeball monster with a giant mouth.

00;15;52;12 - 00;15;55;20

Phil

And very, very tentatively and just kind of like.

00;15;55;24 - 00;16;30;17

Kevin

Yeah, yeah. It's like the I remember doing a game where they had it was like a shambling pile or something like that, which is sure. Which is, I think that's just decaying leaf matter. I changed it because it was more fitting to a to a corpse pile. So basically it was like a ball of like corpses, kind of like shambling towards yeah, that's what it made me think of a little bit.

00;16;30;17 - 00;17;02;11

Kevin

So at the same time, removing the stick, give them the stick. Don't give them that stick. Removing the stick. Cause the water like a basically a basin to start draining into the room. Yeah. So they got this monster and now the room is also filling up with water. Yeah. Ha. Grodd is fighting off the monster because he's literally the only one capable.

00;17;02;24 - 00;17;03;09

Kevin

So pretty.

00;17;03;09 - 00;17;04;03

Phil

Much he's.

00;17;04;05 - 00;17;10;08

Kevin

He's ducking, diving, dodging. Yeah. Dodged up.

00;17;10;08 - 00;17;12;23

Phil

Dove, dove, dodge, duck, dash.

00;17;13;14 - 00;17;14;12

Kevin

Dash and dodge.

00;17;14;13 - 00;17;15;28

Phil

Is dash he's dodging yeah.

00;17;16;06 - 00;17;25;29

Kevin

Yeah, yeah. Bold move and let's see if it pays off now.

00;17;25;29 - 00;17;35;04

Phil

Yeah. It's like this double whammy of just like. Yeah, well, you know what it is? It's the it's the it's the trash compactor scene in Star Wars.

00;17;35;04 - 00;17;37;17

Kevin

It is. It's very much the trash compactor scene.

00;17;37;18 - 00;18;03;15

Phil

Yeah. Yeah. You've got the environmental hazard while you're fighting off the horrible tension monster. Yes. You don't get a good look at it. I will say that for Alan Dean Foster with his monster, sometimes we don't get any description at all, like the the demon, that kind of things. But he does do a good job of like giving you just enough information to let your imagination fill in the rest.

00;18;03;15 - 00;18;13;04

Phil

I know that that's not fashionable these days, but it's pretty cool. And this was a this was a great example of it. What do they what do they call it? It was a weird ass name.

00;18;14;03 - 00;18;15;29

Kevin

Yeah, it was. Oh, it was the.

00;18;16;23 - 00;18;17;23

Phil

Upper Lockean.

00;18;17;26 - 00;18;22;06

Kevin

A Brit Lockean. Yeah, yeah. Bring Lockean.

00;18;22;06 - 00;18;38;07

Phil

Yeah, here you go. Leave. It seemed to have neither ears nor neck. Only a watery, bloated face. It rose higher above the surface of the pool, displaying several lantern like eyes and a vast cavern of a mouth. And that's pretty much all we get. That's kind of enough.

00;18;39;01 - 00;18;40;17

Kevin

It's all you really need.

00;18;40;17 - 00;18;41;13

Phil

That's pretty gross.

00;18;41;20 - 00;19;05;13

Kevin

I think it's pretty gross. I'm not I'm not a fan of that. Um, so to get out of the room, they decide. All right, well, we got to wait for the water to raise us up to the the opening in the ceiling. They do that. They crawl up there all good, hard ride is like it's like basically gets an arm up onto the thing.

00;19;05;15 - 00;19;20;00

Kevin

He's like, this thing's not dying. They pull hard right up and they're like, All right, well, we're here. We're safe. Emeril's like, leans over the opening and says, I think the water stopped coming in so we don't have to rush down the thing.

00;19;20;11 - 00;19;20;15

Phil

Yeah.

00;19;20;21 - 00;19;46;09

Kevin

And then the thing grabs Meryl and pulls her back and pulls her right now. Oh, Meryl, Meryl's jaw jumps right into the water and saves her character. He uses his sword to slice it the thing. It doesn't really do anything. And then Meryl explains later that there's nothing you can do to a block in unless you stab it through the brain.

00;19;46;26 - 00;19;48;21

Phil

Yeah, it's constantly rigidity.

00;19;48;21 - 00;20;13;24

Kevin

Yeah. We'll just be constantly regenerating. Yeah. Proctor does save her. Poles are out the block. Yeah. And then tries to like send up a tentacle through the passage to them. But it's, they're just out of reach and they continue what I imagine is basically crawling through an area shaft kind of like in Die Hard. Yeah, I was it was like, are they in the ventilation system?

00;20;14;17 - 00;20;44;03

Phil

It's just that way. It totally did. And by the way, this is another great example of like every year I really wish I had played the game or something like that. It's tough with this one, but it almost feels and there are lots of moments like this, but at this point it almost feels like the author is telling the reader, If you play the game, you should probably most be running because everyone puts up a fight briefly and then just hauls ass.

00;20;44;03 - 00;20;50;07

Phil

This is three for three that this has happened. Yeah. The goblins are the only people they could stand up to. They, you know.

00;20;50;13 - 00;20;52;01

Kevin

They kill the shit out of the goblins.

00;20;52;01 - 00;20;54;15

Phil

Oh, I have to kill the shit out of them. Kill it.

00;20;54;22 - 00;20;56;09

Kevin

Murdered the shit out.

00;20;56;09 - 00;21;03;01

Phil

It murdered the shit out of those goblins. But. But they're goblins, you know, it's like a quarter screech. What are you going to do?

00;21;03;03 - 00;21;07;22

Kevin

What are you going to do? You need, like, 50 of them to make up one challenge rating point.

00;21;07;22 - 00;21;09;07

Phil

It's not even. Not even worth it.

00;21;09;09 - 00;21;14;08

Kevin

Not even worth it. Maryland's the chapter by flirting more dude.

00;21;16;24 - 00;21;26;24

Phil

I like to think like they they didn't go too deep into it but Proctor's girl back home with the weird name I like I just imagine.

00;21;26;24 - 00;21;28;20

Kevin

Her. Her name is cyanide, right?

00;21;28;20 - 00;21;52;19

Phil

Yeah. It's I just. I'm imagining her as, like, this broad beamed kind of like you know, farm hand kind of lassie. That's just what sticks out in my head is like, girl, his girl back home will crush your LC ass. Like she will break you into a powder if you don't stop flirting with his farm. Boy, I swear to God, I.

00;21;52;19 - 00;21;53;14

Kevin

Swear to God.

00;21;54;06 - 00;21;54;18

Phil

When he's.

00;21;54;18 - 00;21;55;08

Kevin

Gotten married.

00;21;55;08 - 00;21;56;17

Phil

She doesn't know what she's getting into.

00;21;57;19 - 00;22;03;23

Kevin

She will crush your taught 80 year old ass.

00;22;03;23 - 00;22;06;24

Phil

Your immature octogenarian ass.

00;22;07;06 - 00;22;30;09

Kevin

Just knock it off. Anyway, that's the end of Chapter nine. We move on to Chapter ten and we get the party. The party has a restful moment. Basically, they are they find themselves in a water reservoir that is possibly I got the I got the picture that this was where the water came from to fight the bird lock Ian's room.

00;22;30;22 - 00;22;33;20

Phil

Yeah. This used to be fuller than it is now. Yeah.

00;22;34;00 - 00;23;07;08

Kevin

So they chill in the water reservoir and they have the classic, like, oh, what are you going to do when we find the treasure type thing? Yeah, they each have their own thing. So Randall would just get in gem encrusted stuff because it looks cool. Emerald would open a school to teach kids of all races hard. Rod would buy a house for his family on a warm southern continent, and Proctor would give up smithing and buy a nice house for for scurvy and streak.

00;23;07;23 - 00;23;08;29

Phil

Dream high kid.

00;23;09;03 - 00;23;11;27

Kevin

I am available, but I am prior.

00;23;11;27 - 00;23;15;29

Phil

I was I wanted to say dream big and aim high and I went with dream.

00;23;15;29 - 00;23;17;03

Kevin

I dream which.

00;23;17;25 - 00;23;25;00

Phil

Is a is a is a subject that is not unfamiliar to me. Yeah, but not what I meant in the moment.

00;23;26;18 - 00;23;55;14

Kevin

And the conversation kind of comes to an end when Meryl suggests actor that maybe the spinner always intended for you to be the one that took this adventure. Because you're so good at getting people together. And and Maryland actors like me, I don't like that concept because it takes away my agency. He doesn't say that, but he says that in so much of a huff.

00;23;55;23 - 00;23;57;03

Phil

Lets you know that's what he means.

00;23;57;03 - 00;23;59;22

Kevin

That's what he means. Yeah. Yeah.

00;23;59;22 - 00;24;19;06

Phil

Which is an interesting idea. You know, Foster likes to throw in, like in what would what is actually otherwise just kind of a fairly standard dungeon crawl. Yeah, we don't we don't dwell on it. We don't get too deep into it. But yes, we have talked about whether or not it's whether or not a goblins, a human being or a person.

00;24;19;13 - 00;24;40;18

Phil

Yes, we have talked about the fact that you feel hollow and empty by killing somebody dead. Yes. We have talked about agency and, you know, a clever idea of like, well, he wasn't actually looking for your blacksmith boss at all. He was just he was trying to get you get get the right people surrounding him into this fight.

00;24;40;18 - 00;24;48;16

Phil

And that's how you did it. And I don't I don't really buy that argument. For the record. Just the spinner kind of the spinner seemed to have his own self esteem issues.

00;24;48;17 - 00;24;52;10

Kevin

The spinner doth protest too much for that. Be that to be the case.

00;24;52;10 - 00;25;00;12

Phil

Yeah. Yeah. I like to think that that the spinner, like if he was there, he would have been like, yeah, yeah, yeah.

00;25;00;12 - 00;25;03;03

Kevin

She writes totally.

00;25;03;18 - 00;25;12;04

Phil

Lute Lee. Mm hmm. Yeah. That's absolutely what I meant to do. So you figured it out.

00;25;12;04 - 00;25;35;22

Kevin

She this is, this is the Merrill's is kind of annoying chapter. So Merrill says that to practice in practice, it gets tough. And then she plays a joke on Hard Ride for really no reason. None of her grads like, Oh, how do we open this door? And she's like, Oh, let me cast a magic spell. And she pretends to cast a magic spell and then just opens the door and says it was unlocked.

00;25;36;26 - 00;25;37;08

Phil

Yeah.

00;25;38;07 - 00;25;41;08

Kevin

This is like her. God doesn't deserve that.

00;25;41;17 - 00;25;50;18

Phil

He didn't do anything. Like if anyone, you don't want to do that too. It's the friggin rule. Like he's you know our has been nothing arguably literally risked his life.

00;25;50;21 - 00;25;53;20

Kevin

Just the only reason that you guys are alive at the.

00;25;53;22 - 00;26;14;02

Phil

Oh he is such an effective tack as we brought up last time. Like he is very many levels ahead of them it's you know and I do it's like the grass is like the more she talks, the more annoying she becomes. Yeah. At first it was like, Oh, she's mysterious and interesting, and she uses her brain. That's cool.

00;26;14;02 - 00;26;15;02

Phil

That's an interesting.

00;26;15;02 - 00;26;22;08

Kevin

Super smart, smart as a whip, knows her way around things. And then it's like, well, you are just kind of being mean to people a lot too.

00;26;23;13 - 00;26;24;04

Phil

Which is kind of.

00;26;24;05 - 00;26;34;11

Kevin

Which they said is like a trait of the of the phthalate. Are people, I guess. Yeah. But is, is kind of being, you know, hoity toity and condescending.

00;26;34;19 - 00;26;36;09

Phil

But yes, she that's a.

00;26;36;18 - 00;26;39;17

Kevin

Few chapters of the book. She really turns it up to it.

00;26;39;23 - 00;26;46;01

Phil

Oh, my God. Yeah. Like this. It doesn't go down from here. She really gets more and more condescending as this goes on.

00;26;46;08 - 00;27;19;15

Kevin

As in in the next scene, they come into a room with broken furniture and a chest and shrapnel opens the chest and there's nothing but junk until the chest explodes and a giant fireball throws like everybody aside. And then Meryl spends like two pages so radically talking them through, Well, why might this be like this? You you're just not observing well enough, and and shrapnel is just about to, like, stab her in the throat.

00;27;19;15 - 00;27;45;17

Phil

I think it's so singular. He's. Yeah, she's like, hey, remember when, you know, you went after things that are valuable in a trap went off, but, like, it wouldn't it makes sense then that if something seemed kind of mundane, it would end. It did it. There. And and then she falls and starts bleeding and we see a bipedal kangaroo man with a sharpened screwdriver standing above her.

00;27;45;18 - 00;27;48;24

Phil

Yeah. And nothing of value was lost.

00;27;49;23 - 00;27;50;20

Kevin

The book ends there.

00;27;51;01 - 00;27;52;21

Phil

The book. And that's it. That's it. That's all.

00;27;52;21 - 00;28;18;07

Kevin

Book. Meryl basically walks them through. And then finally gets to the point of like, look over there where the pie, there's a bigger pile of junk than everywhere else. And they move aside the pile junk and there's an iron door behind it, like Meryl, we already know you're smart. You don't have to do the thing where you show how smart you are for 15 minutes before showing what the what you figured out.

00;28;18;19 - 00;28;30;07

Phil

And for before oh, so intelligently figuring out that maybe the pile of shit is covering a door. Yeah. I don't think we needed a sage for that. We didn't need a cleanup crew.

00;28;30;07 - 00;28;52;00

Kevin

Yeah. So they, they. And then she continues on the same thing where we're straddle is about to touch the door and she's like, Oh my good roo. And she, it takes like another two paragraphs to explain, like, why he, she shouldn't, he shouldn't touch it. And he's like, What are you talking about? And then she spits on the handle and it sizzles because, yeah.

00;28;52;02 - 00;28;52;10

Phil

The.

00;28;52;10 - 00;28;53;10

Kevin

Handle is hot.

00;28;54;00 - 00;29;01;01

Phil

And then she spits on the roo and calls him a dirty mud blood. And Yeah. And they end the book. The book ends.

00;29;01;26 - 00;29;33;00

Kevin

No, they, they basically they figure out that, okay, well the sticks that they've collected are have some some a power to them. And hard rod uses one of the sticks to to pry the door open to like lower the latch and pry the door open and everything is good and dandy. They get the door open and wouldn't you know it, it's basically Scrooge McDuck vaults in between this door.

00;29;33;09 - 00;29;35;14

Phil

It's the finally find the treasure room.

00;29;35;18 - 00;29;37;15

Kevin

It's the cave of wonders from a Latin.

00;29;38;01 - 00;29;38;28

Phil

Exactly. Yeah.

00;29;38;28 - 00;30;08;09

Kevin

Yeah. And they base, they're walking around, they're looking at all the treasure straddles, like during a Scrooge McDuck dove through the gold. And Procter and Merrill both realize that, oh, the reason this room is here is just to bribe people. Because why would it be here other than to stop people from continuing any further? Yeah. So they're like, we're going to go and strangle is pissed.

00;30;08;18 - 00;30;09;28

Phil

Yeah he is not happy.

00;30;09;28 - 00;30;12;14

Kevin

Is not having it is not having.

00;30;12;14 - 00;30;38;21

Phil

And they also say he's learned nothing but he's also not wrong. It's like it's weird. Yeah. You're, you're in a weird position with Serrano because it's like on one hand, you're like, dude, you have been. You've nearly died. Like 19 times. Always use you just went after some treasure you didn't know anything about. And on the other hand, it's kind of like this thing of like, yeah, let them let him have a Bible if it'll make him happy.

00;30;38;22 - 00;30;40;09

Phil

Just like give him give him something.

00;30;40;09 - 00;30;40;21

Kevin

Give him a little.

00;30;40;21 - 00;30;41;10

Phil

Something, you know.

00;30;41;12 - 00;30;44;13

Kevin

And I think he takes some stuff on the way out the door.

00;30;44;16 - 00;30;49;00

Phil

Yeah. He takes some jewelry and stuff like that and like a jeweled dagger or something like that.

00;30;49;00 - 00;31;01;07

Kevin

So they they leave and they continue on. Serrano catches up at the party, and Specter is like, Oh, the guilt got the better of you. And Serrano's like, Shut the fuck up, man.

00;31;01;19 - 00;31;11;08

Phil

Yeah, that's really good to guilt. Fuck yourself like I'm not. What are you talking about? Guilt got the better of me.

00;31;11;10 - 00;31;14;06

Kevin

Parties at in a real tenuous moment.

00;31;14;25 - 00;31;35;08

Phil

Troop morale all time low. All time low. They've known each other for four days. And it's never been as bad as this. Oh, God. Is this where Serrano explains to them why he's obsessed with treasure? And it's not. It's not about greed. And, like, actually wanting to know. But he.

00;31;35;08 - 00;31;51;27

Kevin

Likes it. Yeah. In the in the scene before, that's when he explains that it's, it's the esthetic he likes. Yes. Things he likes having like you instead of just like the crappy basin he always bathes in. He wants a nice one, you know, it's just a little esthetic changes.

00;31;52;07 - 00;32;01;01

Phil

It's like, yeah, it's like you just want to go to be like you are literally talking about being rich like that is that is no different. What's that?

00;32;01;01 - 00;32;03;25

Kevin

It's just, just having nice things is what riches.

00;32;03;25 - 00;32;14;21

Phil

It's like. It's like I don't, I don't have a, you know, I it's not that I have to be opulently wealthy and have a, you know, Ruby and I just want to, like.

00;32;14;21 - 00;32;16;04

Kevin

Look like I'm opulent.

00;32;16;07 - 00;32;35;03

Phil

But wouldn't it would just look better if I had a I just like the esthetic of being rich more than the esthetic of being poor. That's all. That's all. Like, what's what's so hard to understand about that? So how do you. Come on, come and get in.

00;32;35;12 - 00;32;39;19

Kevin

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, they find Gore with his library.

00;32;40;06 - 00;32;40;25

Phil

Yes, they do.

00;32;40;26 - 00;32;48;08

Kevin

They do. And emeralds. I mean, this is the most excited you're going to get. Meryl's.

00;32;49;00 - 00;32;50;10

Phil

This is her treasure room.

00;32;50;11 - 00;33;05;12

Kevin

This is her treasure room. Except she can't read any of the books because they're written in gore where there's weird ass language that he writes everything down in. So they just start looking around. She's like, Well, maybe he had a diary or something that he was, Oh, I.

00;33;05;12 - 00;33;06;09

Phil

Love this scene.

00;33;06;09 - 00;33;13;16

Kevin

So and they eventually find a diary and there's nothing in it. It's blank. The pages are like.

00;33;14;04 - 00;33;41;24

Phil

If I might interject, they she literally says, We need to fight. I feel like we need to find a diary, something that is handwritten. Look for something that's handwritten ha grad says like this and picks up the diary. It's like the first thing anyone tried for he's like, I got it on the first try which which look, that's better than four pages of them.

00;33;41;24 - 00;33;44;11

Phil

Like, just shift loosely, like searching.

00;33;44;11 - 00;33;49;09

Kevin

Yeah, yeah. But harder feels like it was on the table. It was the only other table there.

00;33;49;13 - 00;33;51;15

Phil

Is next to a sign that said Diary I don't.

00;33;51;15 - 00;34;01;07

Kevin

Know. From the desk of gore with her top of the page says, Dumb things I got to do today.

00;34;01;07 - 00;34;02;16

Phil

Oh, it's just checklist. Cool.

00;34;02;17 - 00;34;08;09

Kevin

Oh, cool then. Yeah. Bye. Normal steak.

00;34;08;26 - 00;34;09;21

Phil

Right?

00;34;09;21 - 00;34;11;06

Kevin

I wasn't. I don't know what that means.

00;34;12;01 - 00;34;12;18

Phil

That's weird.

00;34;13;07 - 00;34;30;12

Kevin

Yeah. So they find his diary, quote unquote diary. There's really nothing in it except for a glass crystalline shard type thing that everybody is like. Now, Meryl's like, Well, why are you taking then? It's like, it's useful and maybe.

00;34;30;12 - 00;34;32;04

Phil

It's you just say, just.

00;34;32;09 - 00;34;34;24

Kevin

Pick it up. Random sticks in the hallway.

00;34;34;24 - 00;34;40;22

Phil

If you pick up random sticks, I pick up random pieces of glass. We've both got a thing we got her.

00;34;40;22 - 00;34;41;14

Kevin

Things.

00;34;41;21 - 00;34;43;15

Phil

We're very will develop better.

00;34;44;10 - 00;35;02;16

Kevin

So they can then there's a bit they search around the library a little bit more. I don't find anything and continue on in the next room where there's a statue and a giant mirror. And yes, they use in this part of the book uses one of my favorite words.

00;35;02;16 - 00;35;06;05

Phil

Supplicant I love supplicant is a great word.

00;35;06;05 - 00;35;08;07

Kevin

I love the supplicant.

00;35;08;07 - 00;35;09;25

Phil

It's its application.

00;35;09;25 - 00;35;16;28

Kevin

It really makes me think of a was the game that you just did a video on earlier in the year?

00;35;17;10 - 00;35;19;00

Phil

Oh, blasphemous.

00;35;19;00 - 00;35;22;16

Kevin

Blasphemous. I feel like the word supplicant was used in blood.

00;35;22;16 - 00;35;33;19

Phil

Oh, absolutely. That's one of those very Catholic words that pops up in games like that. Yeah. Supplication, basically. I mean, means it's like giving yourself up.

00;35;33;19 - 00;35;42;15

Kevin

It's like being down. It's the like being down on your knees and your palms in the air and you're like, right. You are giving yourself up to.

00;35;43;03 - 00;35;53;05

Phil

At the mercy of the gods. Yeah. Kind of thing. Yeah, yeah. Uh, this is a cool room. This is. It's this is a room I would like to have in my. In my dad game.

00;35;53;06 - 00;36;07;11

Kevin

Yeah. Cool room. It is a cool room. They, they have a bit of a debate whether there's anything in the room Merrill's like they're all like, Yeah, let's go. And Merrill is like, Have you guys learned nothing but look around, goddammit?

00;36;07;11 - 00;36;15;04

Phil

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And it's your back on her side at that point. Or you're just like, No, we've got to search the room, guys.

00;36;15;04 - 00;36;22;21

Kevin

Like, like the other three guys just like, walked in and we're like, I don't know, is Mia? And they start leaving and Meryl's like, Fucking Christ. Okay, yeah.

00;36;22;21 - 00;36;25;18

Phil

And she'll search for traps.

00;36;25;18 - 00;36;31;05

Kevin

You and then. And then Serrano's like, What do you think? The mirror is a portal. And he touches the mirror and it's a portal.

00;36;31;26 - 00;36;33;11

Phil

It falls through, basically. Yeah.

00;36;33;29 - 00;36;42;19

Kevin

He touches it. He pulls his hand back, and then Proctor is like, All right, fine, I'll go through there. Practice goes through, everybody else goes through. And it's a one way portal.

00;36;43;11 - 00;36;43;27

Phil

Yes.

00;36;43;27 - 00;37;15;06

Kevin

And they find themselves in like kind of a domed in basically this domed room that has a crystal in the center of it. And through some debate and investigation, they figure out that the crystal, like Gore with her, is inside of it. He is trapped inside of this crystalline formation. So this this these weird, magical wooden sticks have been useful for other things.

00;37;15;06 - 00;37;29;20

Kevin

So Proctor hits the crystal a few times with the wooden stick, which causes it to start to resonate and glow and basically shatter into a million pieces. And wouldn't you know it, there's gore with her.

00;37;29;21 - 00;37;30;26

Phil

They've completed.

00;37;30;26 - 00;37;34;21

Kevin

Their quest. They have freed the wizard.

00;37;34;21 - 00;37;38;24

Phil

No. And Gore is not exactly the guy they were expecting.

00;37;38;24 - 00;37;59;07

Kevin

He's not a ghost. He's he's basically I actually kind of imagined him as what's his name from from Mad Men Sterling. I imagined him with like, what's his name? What's the actor's name?

00;37;59;07 - 00;38;03;28

Phil

And I don't I'm not too. That's a blind spot for John Slattery.

00;38;05;04 - 00;38;05;27

Kevin

Who also played.

00;38;05;28 - 00;38;08;08

Phil

Oh, sure, sure. Yeah. I can see that. Yeah, I.

00;38;08;08 - 00;38;28;23

Kevin

Imagine. Imagine him, like, coming out, like because they're turning out like you're a lot bigger wizard because he has he has close cropped white hair which which is like I think what's his name is like? I've never seen hair that closely cropped before, which is like, okay, it's a weird observation, bro.

00;38;29;02 - 00;38;30;23

Phil

So it's kind of a weird thing to say, but okay.

00;38;31;02 - 00;38;50;23

Kevin

But yeah, he's he's got like, you know, he's got like a high and tight silver haircut and is coming out like a silver fox just like first, like couple hundred years in that thing anyway. And he starts like gathering up crystal shards and they're like, what do you do? And and he's like, Yeah, I know. I'm going with her.

00;38;50;23 - 00;38;54;28

Kevin

And they're like, Oh, okay, we, we've, we've done it. You could go.

00;38;55;01 - 00;38;56;07

Phil

So we're good, right? This is.

00;38;56;09 - 00;39;00;13

Kevin

It. He's like, Oh, no, I'm dead. And they're like, What if you say that again? He's like, No.

00;39;00;14 - 00;39;06;07

Phil

I'm very like, Yo, that just sounds like it sounds just like he was like, I don't want to do it now. I'm.

00;39;06;07 - 00;39;07;22

Kevin

No, I'm fading away.

00;39;08;11 - 00;39;10;07

Phil

Yeah. Oh, did they say.

00;39;10;12 - 00;39;46;26

Kevin

He's like he's like, oh, no, I'm I'm on another plane right now. The me of this plane is very much dead. This is just my essence. It was trapped here by the dude and I'm probably not going to last very long. I got a crossover at some point and they're like, Fuck! And he's like, Yeah, okay. So he gathers up a bunch of crystals and he cast spell on their little crystal chunk, and he gives it to Protector, and he's like, Here, take this.

00;39;47;12 - 00;40;10;13

Kevin

Yeah, yeah, it'll be useful. And then he basically whispers something in Merrill's ear and he's like, Yeah, and Gore, there's like, Y'all have been lovely. Thank you for Get Me Out of the crystal thing. Did not like the past couple of hundred years that I've been stuck in there piss I'm out. And then he basically fades fades into oblivion yeah.

00;40;10;24 - 00;40;38;07

Phil

Yeah no let me. I this is this is not the only time that Meryl either whispers something to somebody or has something whispered to her. And this to me, and we're going to get to it. But I want to I just want to put a pin in this now where this is this is like I had a hard time imagining how long he was whispering to her based on what's going to come up.

00;40;38;07 - 00;40;40;18

Kevin

Based on what she figure, what she does.

00;40;40;18 - 00;40;42;23

Phil

Yeah, yes, yes, exactly.

00;40;42;23 - 00;41;21;01

Kevin

So she starts gathering up some crystals and she takes them over to the spinny wheelie thing that they find at the far end of the room, which is similar to the spinning wheel. You think they found down in the barracks I believe. And she's like, Oh yeah, he told me how to use this thing and she puts in some crystals to charge it and she starts spinning the wheel and they all got to hold hands while they stand around and the room starts spinning around them.

00;41;21;09 - 00;41;55;06

Kevin

And wouldn't, you know it, they have been teleported to the throne room of the castle and it's massive. It is a gigantic throne room. There are there are windows in this throne room bigger than any of the buildings. That's what's his face Proctor has ever seen before. It's just this gigantic structure. And in the middle of the room, at the foot of this grotesque, gigantic statue, it's just a statue.

00;41;55;20 - 00;42;03;00

Kevin

This grotesque, gigantic statue sitting in a throne is basically Dante from Devil May Cry, but.

00;42;06;23 - 00;42;07;01

Phil

Like.

00;42;07;01 - 00;42;09;21

Kevin

Eight feet tall. That's kind of how I pictured them in my head.

00;42;10;04 - 00;42;23;11

Phil

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's can find it. It was like four, four. This guy supposed to be him. He's meant to be a demon kind of guy. And it yeah, it just.

00;42;23;22 - 00;42;26;16

Kevin

He's like, he looks like a madman, but he has lizard eyes.

00;42;27;09 - 00;42;29;22

Phil

Right? Yeah, that's it. That's really it.

00;42;29;22 - 00;42;36;07

Kevin

Like I was going to say from Devil May Cry in there and you, you know, I mean, I'll do that. That'll do.

00;42;36;15 - 00;42;37;16

Phil

Yeah. Why not.

00;42;37;17 - 00;42;56;16

Kevin

They approach and they have a little tete a tete, they have some words, they exchange words. And he's like, I'm fascinated that you guys got in here, but you guys are going to go pretty quickly. And he calls his guards and they start a there's this is the beginning of the end. They have their final showdown starting here.

00;42;56;23 - 00;43;18;27

Kevin

And a hard crowd barks out the orders. They form a defensive around Maryland and they just start fighting off these little gremlin head mini dude slicing them down and they kill everything. They they they kill everything. And the the demon guy on the throne who we're calling Dale. Brad for Dale.

00;43;19;20 - 00;43;20;00

Phil

Sure.

00;43;20;06 - 00;43;30;19

Kevin

Yeah, he's like, he does the Thanos thing and says, I'll do it myself. And he hops off the throne and immediately kills Serano just so quick.

00;43;30;19 - 00;43;32;26

Phil

Just kills the just so quick.

00;43;32;26 - 00;43;33;27

Kevin

Kills the shit out of them.

00;43;34;05 - 00;43;53;27

Phil

Just it's like, for, for how like why a and very kind of like cute charming. This has been up until now it's it's it's not the worst thing I've ever read but it's kind of a surprisingly graphic death. Yeah. Like he just impaled him. Yeah.

00;43;54;03 - 00;44;00;27

Kevin

System on his sword, pulls them out and shrapnel dies in a puddle of blood with a surprise look on his face.

00;44;00;27 - 00;44;06;19

Phil

Oh, yeah, which is. Look, look. We all knew that Serrano would die with a surprised look on his face.

00;44;06;19 - 00;44;07;09

Kevin

That he does.

00;44;07;18 - 00;44;08;25

Phil

That is to care.

00;44;08;25 - 00;44;40;03

Kevin

Yeah, that's. That's right. Right and right in character. So they they start fighting hard, right. Is is pressing the advantage on this giant demon dude and. He can't make contact basically. He's ephemeral. He can he can kill them, but they can't touch him. And then Merode whispers something too hard. Rod and her rod takes the stick of truth that they have been using so often recently.

00;44;40;03 - 00;44;42;22

Phil

And that's a very valuable magic item.

00;44;43;01 - 00;45;04;16

Kevin

Her just stabs him right through the fucking chest with this stick. Yeah. And that turns him solid with the with the stick in his chest. And this dude's like, oh, that's not a good thing. And Proctor then stabs the dude in the back and he's like, Oh, I am slain. And he falls to the ground.

00;45;05;27 - 00;45;23;15

Phil

And they love they have a moment there where as Predator is stabbing him in the back, he's saying like he basically has like a not the hero we need, but the hero we deserve moment. Or he's like, this isn't the kind of killing blow that a hero should do, but it's what we need to do in this moment.

00;45;23;24 - 00;45;25;03

Phil

It's just fucking kill.

00;45;25;10 - 00;45;28;08

Kevin

As he's stabbing you like this isn't chivalrous.

00;45;28;08 - 00;45;33;13

Phil

No. Yeah, but then you weren't speaking as as a knight, so.

00;45;33;15 - 00;45;34;06

Kevin

Come on, man.

00;45;34;26 - 00;45;38;18

Phil

Let's just get on with the fighter jet. That's all I can lawful over here.

00;45;38;18 - 00;45;49;06

Kevin

Jesus Christ. Lawful. Good for me to tears protector. Anyway, practice like so we did it right this good shrapnel died.

00;45;50;08 - 00;45;54;27

Phil

Well, yeah, that's true. It's. It's kind of over there like. Oh, that sucks.

00;45;56;10 - 00;45;57;27

Kevin

That sucks. But we did it right.

00;45;58;00 - 00;46;13;23

Phil

What was it they say at one point? So it's like I didn't expect it to be that easy. And he has a good point. He goes, tell him that it shows that The Sopranos. Oh, right. Sopranos did I mean. Yeah, yeah.

00;46;14;11 - 00;46;37;13

Kevin

So they're standing there and they're like, Well, we did it. And no, they didn't because no, the giant thing that they thought was a statue was not a statue. That was Dalle Bread. It is this gigantic, grotesque, like, Oh, that's the king of the demons. Now, Brad explained, like, that was the Prince of Prince of Darkness that you just killed.

00;46;37;19 - 00;46;48;20

Kevin

He he basically does all the work that I that I ask and he does all the moving because I don't like to move it literally.

00;46;48;20 - 00;47;06;20

Phil

I love that line. It literally is. He's pissed off that he is being forced to move. He literally says that and now I'm going to kill you because I hate moving. Because moving is like the enemy of intellectual pursuit or something.

00;47;06;20 - 00;47;09;18

Kevin

Something like that. It's like it's such a waste of time, you know?

00;47;09;18 - 00;47;19;08

Phil

I didn't expect to be I didn't expect to be attacked like this in my home by this by this fantasy novel. But fuck yeah. A little bit validates.

00;47;19;20 - 00;47;33;06

Kevin

This was this was it was like a mojo from from Marvel the alien dude who just floats on a platform and watches people kill them, kill each other.

00;47;34;00 - 00;47;35;22

Phil

I love it. Yeah. So.

00;47;36;01 - 00;47;57;06

Kevin

So Dal bread grabs protector in his hands and is going to eat him and practice takes out the gem that's Gawain there gave and throws it right down the right down the gullet and that basically causes dal bread to explode from the inside out.

00;47;57;06 - 00;48;11;27

Phil

Yeah, it's kind of like the scene in return to Oz where the the gnome king is trying to eat Dorothy and a chicken egg falls into his mouth. Then they just crumbles to dust. That's how I imagine that's pretty.

00;48;11;27 - 00;48;20;11

Kevin

Much how it happens. Yeah. Yeah. And now evil is defeated now. And they're like, I'm in. Serrano is still dead.

00;48;20;22 - 00;48;27;15

Phil

If it's still still dead, still dead as it turns.

00;48;27;20 - 00;48;33;28

Kevin

But it's still very dead. And then Meryl is like, Well, maybe not so dead because.

00;48;34;00 - 00;48;34;22

Phil

This Meryl, this.

00;48;35;00 - 00;48;59;14

Kevin

This, this castle, even though the owner of the castle is gone now, both of them were with her and Brad. The castle still has its own magic and wonders and all that stuff. So they go over to a particular statue, which is as it's it's basically a statue of one of the brothers of aid, I believe they had explained explain them a little bit earlier.

00;48;59;14 - 00;49;14;03

Kevin

They were like these mystical banks or what have you. And after they make an offering to the statue and the statue's, like your offerings accepted and it takes it resurrects Randle and they're like.

00;49;14;14 - 00;49;25;29

Phil

They literally use a flower that they find in the room and like that's, that's, that's what we got to offer. He's like, cool yeah I'll I'll bring anyone back to life for a random fucking flower that you found on the ground. Sure. Thank you.

00;49;26;02 - 00;49;27;01

Kevin

Uh huh, you guys are great.

00;49;27;21 - 00;49;29;12

Phil

It's about time someone opened up to me.

00;49;29;23 - 00;49;36;22

Kevin

And Serrano's life, and they're like, well, that's. That's the end.

00;49;37;16 - 00;49;41;06

Phil

To, like, he's a he's alive an immediately.

00;49;41;06 - 00;49;42;03

Kevin

He's talking shit. I mean.

00;49;43;02 - 00;49;56;03

Phil

He, like, grabs the sword from one of the the demons and, like, gets killed by a trap immediately all over again. Dan, it's. Ah, if we got another flower, could we bring him back again? Yeah. Man, your flower. Whatever.

00;49;56;05 - 00;50;04;12

Kevin

Your flower. Now it's fine. Yeah. Do so that's pretty much the end of the book. Yes. When I say pretty much that is the end of the book.

00;50;05;00 - 00;50;23;15

Phil

Yeah. Yeah. We get, we get a real quick recap on like what's everyone using their the treasure that they're inevitably going to go grab for. All right. You're getting the house you're getting the house for your sweetheart and you're going to do your Scrooge McDuck thing and you're making a school. You teach children of all the races to be condescending.

00;50;23;15 - 00;50;28;07

Phil

Dick, we tease them the end.

00;50;29;26 - 00;50;37;13

Kevin

So this book took a hard nosedive in the last four chapters.

00;50;38;09 - 00;50;41;14

Phil

It really did get teary.

00;50;41;14 - 00;50;46;07

Kevin

It was loving this book up until they got to Shadow Key, which is what the book's about.

00;50;47;01 - 00;51;09;11

Phil

Which is which is, by the way, the thing that made me happy because too frequently with these books, you get to a point where you're like, okay, we were having fun here on the journey, but are we ever going to get to the fucking point? And the book's like, Hey, we're halfway through. We gotten to the point where here's the adventure and you're like, Thank you.

00;51;09;11 - 00;51;17;17

Phil

And then like five pages and you're like, Oh no, it was. Yeah, I was enjoying this much more when it was like The Hobbit.

00;51;17;25 - 00;51;28;10

Kevin

Yeah, it was. It was very fun. And I think what happened was all the characters kind of became Flanders ized.

00;51;29;12 - 00;51;29;26

Phil

Yeah.

00;51;29;26 - 00;51;55;00

Kevin

In once they got to Shadow Key, so all of their worst characteristics became the only thing about them. Yeah. So, Randall was he was a rogues rogue. All he cared about was the Golds and Marigold was the know it all. And Procter was the naive leader who just was like.

00;51;55;11 - 00;51;56;06

Phil

He's Leonardo.

00;51;56;06 - 00;52;02;08

Kevin

He's the Leonardo. And hard rod was the only one doing his fucking job without.

00;52;02;23 - 00;52;06;12

Phil

Our our rod was the, the competent one that.

00;52;06;12 - 00;52;27;05

Kevin

He brought a lot of competence and he flattened ized into even more competence. Right. Yeah. So that's that's kind of my issue with the book as we go through is shadow keep where it was it felt needs and then there was a bunch of things that felt like they were being set up that just never paid off in any measurable way.

00;52;27;15 - 00;52;37;26

Kevin

There's yeah, there's the innkeeper, the mysterious innkeeper. Norrell with all the stuff that he had in the back, I thought that something was going to come of that.

00;52;38;21 - 00;53;00;03

Phil

We get, we get all these little, little tokens and stuff like that that are picked up in Shadow Key that never come back around me. And then actually brings me to my question now having said that, we have not played this game. Is it possible that this is meant to be tie ins to the game itself and it was meant to be hints along the way somehow?

00;53;00;04 - 00;53;23;04

Kevin

Yeah. References to stuff that happened in the game perhaps, right. I don't know. And that's the thing is that there isn't enough there isn't enough information about the game it is available on my abandoned where to download is pending that you have a apple two emulator somewhere lying about right which I'm sure is not is not that hard to find out on the internet.

00;53;23;04 - 00;53;34;05

Kevin

But yeah, it's and if you look up online most people only play like 20 minutes of the game, which I think is only a portion of the game where if you find videos.

00;53;34;05 - 00;53;35;13

Phil

I can't imagine. Yeah.

00;53;35;16 - 00;54;01;07

Kevin

So that's the thing is I don't know enough about the game itself to say confidently that these are not references to the players of what you're supposed to do in certain situations or what. There are hints as to like how to kill something or what have you. I don't know. Yeah. That being said, a lot of these little things did not.

00;54;02;10 - 00;54;05;24

Kevin

They felt like setups and then they had no payoffs.

00;54;06;21 - 00;54;33;02

Phil

Absolutely. Yeah, I totally agree. In the last third of the book, there are a bunch of little set ups that nothing comes of it. I also found myself very annoyed with how frequently we had in. This is along the same line where we had information that was clearly kept between usually Maryland and somebody else. Right. And it it's never explained.

00;54;33;02 - 00;54;50;18

Phil

It's just this coy little like, well, this is something I know it's like this, but got the con like I'm not saying you have to explain every little thing, but either either explain it or don't like it. It becomes a it was just a weird choice. It was a very weird, weird choice.

00;54;51;03 - 00;54;59;02

Kevin

Also shadow keep the traps and stuff that they find in shadow keep was a little bit of a letdown for how much it was talked about.

00;54;59;29 - 00;55;00;26

Phil

Yeah, yeah.

00;55;00;26 - 00;55;12;16

Kevin

I thought it was going to be a little bit more intimidating than than than what ends up happening, if that makes sense. I.

00;55;13;08 - 00;55;50;27

Phil

I get the distinct impression that if shadow keep existed in the South, then a handful of preppers kids would have completely wiped it out ages ago. It was it's not. It really, especially with our characters, they don't show any grand abilities. Right. You know, they're scrappy. It is. But if that's all it takes, then why did we need an interdimensional character to come and choose somebody to go in and end this thing?

00;55;50;27 - 00;55;54;28

Phil

It didn't feel like it took the step with us. It was a level three adventure at best.

00;55;54;29 - 00;56;07;26

Kevin

Yeah, yeah, definitely. Definitely. It was. It was a starter. It was a starting adventure that yeah, it tests low level characters on a much within the confines of a much larger campaign.

00;56;08;18 - 00;56;10;14

Phil

But big time absolute that and.

00;56;10;25 - 00;56;15;11

Kevin

That is how I view the castle of shadow. Keep itself.

00;56;16;03 - 00;56;21;13

Phil

Yeah absolutely this you know temple of elemental evil. This is not you.

00;56;22;08 - 00;56;25;02

Kevin

Know this is fairly lost finds a over.

00;56;26;25 - 00;56;39;27

Phil

Right. It's just yeah it it gets it like I said before, I think this book did, was at its best when we were in the Hobbit mode where it was like we're building the real shadow keep was the friends.

00;56;40;00 - 00;56;42;19

Kevin

Yes, we're building the worlds.

00;56;42;19 - 00;56;44;10

Phil

That was where that was so much.

00;56;44;10 - 00;56;53;09

Kevin

That is where the book was at its best. And I felt like, yes, this could have been this is a book that could have been.

00;56;55;08 - 00;56;58;19

Phil

A one piece.

00;56;58;19 - 00;57;23;27

Kevin

One piece. No, I think it's a book that could have been much, much longer, possibly twice as long. We're sure a little bit more worlds building in there, but also just more shadow keep ins and just a little bit more interesting, shadow key.

00;57;24;21 - 00;57;42;05

Phil

We could have had like a third of the book be gathering the party and then. Yeah, and like this, that would have been a good book, you know, this twisting, turning maze of a place with intricate. Yeah. Basically take a really good dungeon crawl and and novel.

00;57;42;05 - 00;57;43;07

Kevin

And write it down. Yeah.

00;57;43;24 - 00;58;13;29

Phil

Yeah, yeah. Which, which I think on its, on its face this was what it was meant. That was, that was the idea. But either, you know, I said before that this book is very much a product of its time here with the fantasy, and I stand by that with the fantasy part. But based on what I suspect, I have to give the benefit of the doubt and assume that this is meant to be read in conjunction with signature on some level.

00;58;13;29 - 00;58;18;02

Phil

And if that's the case, then it's doubly a product of its time.

00;58;18;02 - 00;58;33;29

Kevin

Yes, exactly. Yeah. Yeah, no, that makes sense. I think it would be worth maybe we'll maybe we'll ask the man about it. Maybe maybe we'll ask. Maybe. I don't know. Maybe it's.

00;58;33;29 - 00;58;34;19

Phil

Distinctly pop.

00;58;34;21 - 00;58;37;16

Kevin

Maybe we can ask. And Dean Foster, what the.

00;58;37;17 - 00;58;39;01

Phil

There's only one way to find out.

00;58;39;01 - 00;58;40;06

Kevin

One way to find out.

00;58;41;07 - 00;58;42;12

Phil

By asking him.

00;58;42;12 - 00;58;48;14

Kevin

By asking him wink. Mm hmm.

00;58;48;14 - 00;59;03;03

Phil

But what are we being coy about? We're like Meryl in that fun book we just finished like emeralds. It's like, that is exquisite. You're such a man of such emeralds.

00;59;03;03 - 00;59;03;26

Kevin

What are you playing?

00;59;05;03 - 00;59;32;16

Phil

Oh. Oh, I have. I am. I haven't been able to play as much this week because of moving and stuff. You guys might know that my. My, my office is, like, growing around me, but I did get a chance to play one really interesting little indie game that I highly recommend called Save Room. Hmm. And this is I think it's like a few bucks.

00;59;32;16 - 01;00;09;29

Phil

The game is literally taking the grid based inventory system of resident evil and turns it into a puzzle game. Huh. That's so you're. It's really neat. Like, so you have your your grid with your inventory and you have a bunch of items and you have to by hook or by crook, get them all fitted into the grid. And some of the items you can use, some you can combine with each other, others just have weird they take up weird shapes and sizes in it and you just have to figure out what works best.

01;00;10;08 - 01;00;34;26

Phil

It took me like a handful of hours to, like, fully beat it, but I was, I, I was not. I basically took care of it in like two sets, right? Because I just couldn't stop. I was like, this is this appeals in a very real way to the puzzle part of my brain. And the esthetic is totally resident evil like the font, everything from the font to the the items, they're herbs and stuff like that.

01;00;35;04 - 01;00;48;05

Phil

And it's just a really neat, very simple puzzle game that takes you a few hours. And I had a blast with It's so much fun cost a few more sounds fun.

01;00;48;05 - 01;00;49;07

Kevin

I might have to check that out.

01;00;49;07 - 01;00;51;12

Phil

Yeah it was super fun. Save room saved.

01;00;51;23 - 01;00;52;02

Kevin

Steam.

01;00;53;11 - 01;00;53;20

Phil

Yep.

01;00;53;20 - 01;01;02;03

Kevin

Totally cool. Cool. In terms of what I've been playing, I finally polished off all the current achievements on vampire survivors.

01;01;02;26 - 01;01;06;00

Phil

That's a SO achievement to achieve a twin.

01;01;06;00 - 01;01;20;07

Kevin

So we'll see if that happens. If that stays fine until when they do the 1.0 updating game. Yeah, they're just going to add a few more achievements and take my little blue ribbon away that I have on steam.

01;01;21;09 - 01;01;24;23

Phil

It's good that ribbon is such a it's so good. It feels.

01;01;24;23 - 01;01;38;28

Kevin

So good. It feels so good. Once you get that blue ribbon. It's actually the first game that I got the blue ribbon on for for Steam also. And I was like, Oh, so that's why there's a little outline of a ribbon next to achievements. Never knew that.

01;01;38;28 - 01;01;46;10

Phil

I love it. I'm such an achievement nerd that it's like that. It's yeah, I've got, I don't have a lot, but I have a few and it always feels so.

01;01;46;12 - 01;01;54;13

Kevin

The other thing is I finally I beat my second play through the quarry, so I'm probably pretty much done with that for now and.

01;01;54;17 - 01;01;59;05

Phil

Nice had you did you had you you managed to get the achievement you were looking for.

01;02;00;07 - 01;02;10;16

Kevin

Hold on. Camilla's. Yeah. Yes, Camilla, I. Hello. Goodbye. There we go.

01;02;11;21 - 01;02;13;25

Phil

And she's older. We've got to get her to guess on this.

01;02;13;25 - 01;02;32;00

Kevin

Yes, of course. So was I talking about. Oh, yes. So I finally finished my second playthrough of the quarry. And yeah, I got I got the achievements that I was looking for. There's a bunch of other ones that have 72% of the achievements, 29 out of 40.

01;02;33;16 - 01;02;34;22

Phil

That's very respectful.

01;02;34;27 - 01;02;44;09

Kevin

Respectful, man. I think I'm I think I'm going to go ahead and uninstall it and be happy with my time spent with the quarry so I can.

01;02;44;09 - 01;02;55;00

Phil

That is that is exactly the attitude I think one should have. At a certain point. You just go, you know what, I'm uninstalling you. And I'm and I'm content with and.

01;02;55;00 - 01;03;16;04

Kevin

Content with way I played to you for 25 hours. And yeah, I had two full playthroughs. I got all of the clues and all the evidence in the game and I saw and I did a playthrough where I kept all the kids alive. Yeah, that's. That's, that's that. I'm great.

01;03;17;08 - 01;03;21;11

Phil

That's great. It's going to have to do. We're good.

01;03;21;11 - 01;03;26;20

Kevin

Coming up next because people were talking about it. I might be back on my bullshit and.

01;03;27;12 - 01;03;27;22

Phil

I'm.

01;03;28;16 - 01;03;30;09

Kevin

Reinstall XCOM to.

01;03;31;28 - 01;03;40;22

Phil

Oh fucking god see now you said at anytime someone says X come to I get a little tingle and go well maybe maybe I should.

01;03;40;29 - 01;03;55;28

Kevin

Install it, maybe it's like that meme with, with what's his name from The Hobbit with, with Bilbo. Like looking down at the rings, like, after all, why shouldn't I put the rig off?

01;03;56;07 - 01;04;13;02

Phil

Why shouldn't I reinstall XCOM two? I've got you know what I'll tell you what, that helps me scratch that itch. I have it on my switch too. And that and it's not, it's just as buggy as it is on PC. And so whenever they.

01;04;13;02 - 01;04;13;29

Kevin

Lose wasn't anything.

01;04;14;16 - 01;04;29;25

Phil

No man. But, but, but you can sit on the couch sitting back, you know, and hang out and, you know, and just play a level or two or something like that and get pissed off, throw it across the room and, you know, just like you would with your PC.

01;04;30;06 - 01;04;42;00

Kevin

Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what I did? What would I did put in a deposit for though and I'm probably not going to get it until the end of the year is a steam deck. Oh.

01;04;42;14 - 01;04;56;12

Phil

Oh. I keep thinking about. Yeah, I keep thinking about that. Yeah. Because I'm finally at a point where I'm making big boy money. It's like, but I should probably upgrade my PC before I get a toy.

01;04;57;09 - 01;05;18;12

Kevin

A toy and toys with me. Yeah. Which is I, it's it's, I think it's more, more potent than the switches. It actually will have a dock too so you can. Oh wow. The dock is not ready yet, but it will have a dock that you can just like sit it in, you know, like, well, now it's on your TV or whatever, so.

01;05;18;12 - 01;05;20;05

Phil

Right. Looks, that's pretty bad.

01;05;20;05 - 01;05;24;12

Kevin

I am. I'm thinking I might do it. I don't know.

01;05;25;14 - 01;05;46;18

Phil

That that does an awesome damn. Okay. Yeah, well, I need to. I will basically need to hear all about that from you when and if it. Yes, yes. Because that that that would be that's that's the kind of that's one of those items that is very, very much a my friend loves his and therefore I need to grab one kind of.

01;05;46;20 - 01;05;55;28

Kevin

Yeah, exactly. So we'll see. We'll see how it is. I'm I'm I'm cautiously optimistic that it'll be the worst purchase of my life.

01;05;57;12 - 01;05;58;18

Phil

It's going to ruin your life.

01;05;58;21 - 01;06;14;29

Kevin

It's going to be something that absolutely ruins my life. We'll see. Yeah. Yeah. So that'll do it for our coverage of Chateau. Keep the next book that we are reading, which is great. Ubisoft is totally in the news. When are they not in the news?

01;06;14;29 - 01;06;18;22

Phil

For whatever reason, they. They just nothing to get out of the news.

01;06;19;05 - 01;06;43;19

Kevin

They're just in the news and they're the worst company in the world. But regardless, terrible. Most of the a lot of the companies that we talk about are morally bankrupt anyways. So that's not going to stay screwing our show. We are going to be covering this guy right here. It'll be a one episode, one episode special. We are talking Assassin's Creed Bloodstone.

01;06;43;19 - 01;07;12;26

Kevin

I got the complete collection in here. It's the complete collection's. Not very long. It is not. Yeah, it is. It is probably four issues or so it looks like that was turned into a graphic novel. So we are going to read that cover that in one episode. It is an Assassin's Creed story set in Vietnam. So there's no way that this is going to turn out in a way that is good.

01;07;13;12 - 01;07;19;07

Kevin

I have low expectations. It's an Assassin's Creed story set in Vietnam, written by a French guy.

01;07;19;16 - 01;07;25;08

Phil

Who in which two of the 3 to 2 of the worst things of all time write their off.

01;07;25;09 - 01;07;31;16

Kevin

It is it is not a good idea, but we're going to read it anyway and see what's up.

01;07;32;27 - 01;07;36;00

Phil

Come on. Come on. What show do you think you're listening to?

01;07;36;07 - 01;07;37;18

Kevin

We're going to we're going to do it anyway.

01;07;38;14 - 01;07;40;18

Phil

We didn't start a Shakespeare podcast.

01;07;41;02 - 01;07;43;09

Kevin

God damn. Did not because.

01;07;43;09 - 01;07;43;29

Phil

No, sir.

01;07;44;04 - 01;07;47;27

Kevin

Because that would be a terrible idea. Who the fuck would?

01;07;47;27 - 01;08;00;15

Phil

Because I don't think that podcast is like no one wants. That's if you think if you think that we're reaching a limited audience now, wait until you hear our opinions on King Lear. Boy, oh, boy.

01;08;00;15 - 01;08;18;01

Kevin

Howdy. For some reason, I always associate King Lear with Diablo because of the was the first boss in Diablo. King Lear, Eric.

01;08;19;17 - 01;08;21;08

Phil

Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

01;08;21;20 - 01;08;28;26

Kevin

Makes me think the name always makes me think of Lear and I don't know.

01;08;28;26 - 01;08;30;28

Phil

I never even thought about that. That's awesome.

01;08;30;28 - 01;08;38;09

Kevin

So every time I see King Lear in my head, I think of lyric from from my diablo.

01;08;39;06 - 01;08;41;02

Phil

So makes sense. Yeah.

01;08;42;02 - 01;08;43;08

Kevin

Yeah why not.

01;08;44;01 - 01;08;46;09

Phil

Anyway wrapped up another book my friend.

01;08;46;17 - 01;08;47;05

Kevin

What's it?

01;08;47;05 - 01;08;50;15

Phil

Shit. We wrapped up another book. We wrapped up another book. Look at.

01;08;50;15 - 01;09;08;10

Kevin

That. Look at that, that for those of you watching on YouTube, you're missing all those of you watching on YouTube saw what I did you those of you listening are missing all the bits that I'm doing with my.

01;09;08;20 - 01;09;19;28

Phil

So those of you who are listening at home, Kevin tossed his book into the air and it exploded and became tuned up to SLU in opposite directions. Yes. Yeah, it's beautiful.

01;09;21;08 - 01;09;27;03

Kevin

Eat your heart out. What's his name? Who's the director? That.

01;09;28;06 - 01;09;32;07

Phil

Uh oh, oh, oh. Eating a jet li, you know.

01;09;32;07 - 01;09;35;20

Kevin

Well, Jet Li was in the movies, but who's director who did that shit?

01;09;36;17 - 01;09;38;19

Phil

Oh, he also did face off, right?

01;09;38;19 - 01;09;40;23

Kevin

Yeah. Yeah.

01;09;40;29 - 01;09;44;00

Phil

Was fucking dumb I think. I thought you were say like.

01;09;44;00 - 01;09;44;26

Kevin

Eat your heart out.

01;09;44;26 - 01;09;54;29

Phil

John Woo. I thought you were going to say I thought you were going to say like like a David Copperfield or something in your.

01;09;54;29 - 01;09;57;16

Kevin

Heart out David Copperfield.

01;09;59;28 - 01;10;01;05
