Golden Axe Part 2 with Dylan Perry

In this episode Ax Battler wins! Cause of course he does, he just keeps on winning.

00;00;00;20 - 00;00;18;01
Phil
In my experience, most of the day I'd be like, Yeah, it's a pretty great game, or It's a pretty great movie or something. It's just so fucking stupid and woke. That's what pisses me off and they get mad about that aspect of it. Although there are still people, as you pointed out, who will twist themselves in knots to just out.

00;00;18;12 - 00;00;22;19
Phil
That's what anon is. That's all this stuff. Reality means nothing.

00;00;23;15 - 00;00;45;09
Kevin
But you know where reality means something but you. Hey there, everybody. Welcome back to the show. My name is Kevin. Alongside with me, as always, is Phil. And continuing on from last week, Dylan is here. We're going to finish off. Go, Max.

00;00;45;22 - 00;00;46;06
Phil
Dylan.

00;00;46;06 - 00;00;47;00
Dylan
Dylan, have you all.

00;00;47;14 - 00;00;54;01
Phil
I want you to appreciate what just happened here. Kevin As in how many episodes of we have so far?

00;00;54;02 - 00;00;58;00
Kevin
Kevin Where 60 something are closing in on 70, I think.

00;00;58;06 - 00;00;58;29
Dylan
Yeah, that's right.

00;00;59;01 - 00;01;00;19
Phil
Guys, congratulations. Thank you very.

00;01;00;19 - 00;01;00;27
Dylan
Much.

00;01;01;24 - 00;01;19;01
Phil
This is only the second time that Kevin has actually managed to take me completely off guard with the. But you know, what is intro thing like he got me on our year anniversary show and he got me now, so well done.

00;01;19;01 - 00;01;27;13
Kevin
Cause it was like, I was like, Oh, he's ranting. This is perfect.

00;01;27;13 - 00;01;49;21
Dylan
I need you well the producer to keep other I feel like it's a I try to conduct my own not like a podcast or it was like a it was something like an interview. Like when you interview me that one time, Kevin, there was a you guys like doing something similar and neither one of us, we ended up just like ranting about or like just talking about random shit for like 3 hours and it was like 3 hours.

00;01;49;21 - 00;02;02;00
Dylan
Like, do not have to like, spend like on that, you know what I mean? Yep. And afterwards I was like, Fuck, I'm like 2 hours behind. It's just so easy to like, do you if you just get caught up chatting about any old thing? Yeah.

00;02;02;17 - 00;02;06;11
Phil
That's what's happening. That's what happens when you surround yourself with kick ass people. It's. It's a mother.

00;02;06;11 - 00;02;10;11
Dylan
Sure. It's like you want to talk about this and like, Oh, damn, did you see this thing later? It's like.

00;02;10;21 - 00;02;11;22
Kevin
Oh, no, man. I want to tell you.

00;02;11;22 - 00;02;16;11
Dylan
Though, we do have to talk about the Golden AX book. About it is the premise of why we were here.

00;02;16;14 - 00;02;22;00
Kevin
Let's see. Yeah, you're right. Let's talk about the show that we were on the show.

00;02;22;20 - 00;02;23;03
Dylan
Remember?

00;02;23;03 - 00;02;25;09
Dylan
Oh, Battler. He's doing.

00;02;25;10 - 00;02;28;28
Kevin
Some battler where as battler oh a more like sorry.

00;02;29;02 - 00;02;29;13
Dylan
As.

00;02;30;27 - 00;02;35;11
Kevin
Ash at asshole or nailed it is.

00;02;35;20 - 00;02;44;29
Dylan
He did I'm you know it's like it's like he did show him a moment of contrition when he got attacked by that skeleton and fucked him up a little bit about it. Oh, yeah, that's true.

00;02;45;01 - 00;02;50;09
Kevin
He's like, I mean, he's a good guy.

00;02;50;09 - 00;02;50;18
Dylan
I think.

00;02;50;18 - 00;02;57;15
Kevin
We can. All of us. Yeah. He thought about it, his life and his decisions a little bit at one point when.

00;02;57;15 - 00;02;57;29
Dylan
We were.

00;02;58;10 - 00;02;58;18
Phil
Little.

00;02;58;19 - 00;03;33;06
Kevin
So we're picking up at a Chapter nine, an ax. He arrives at the castle and he just kills so many dudes here. But he's out of potions. Um, and in my notes, I don't know why I wrote this. He's out of potions. Potions? What's a bro to do anyway? The chapter ends with Lad's loud footsteps approaching him. An ax breaks the fourth wall and says something about how he'd be really bummed if this was anticlimactic.

00;03;33;07 - 00;03;34;21
Dylan
Oh, yeah, I know.

00;03;35;12 - 00;03;37;26
Dylan
I was on. That's right.

00;03;37;29 - 00;03;48;27
Dylan
I there are quite a few moments moving like in, in like the castle section. Yeah. Go off the rails like a little bit like that and it's.

00;03;48;27 - 00;03;50;25
Kevin
Like it's not Looney Tunes. It is.

00;03;50;25 - 00;04;16;29
Dylan
Certainly. I don't know, man. Like, my, my hot take about this book is that it's like it's the good kind of bad, you know what I mean? I just I was the whole time I was reading it, I was, like, giggling and whatever. And then and what like, what I will say, as I say, is that sometimes I don't know if you guys feel this way either, but sometimes in like an action scene or like a, you know, usually I feel like there are action scenes.

00;04;16;29 - 00;04;41;12
Dylan
I almost feel like ironically, even though some of the, the variability in like quality and like engagement is so intense, but there would sometimes be bits and I wish I had one like here to give us an example. It was just like, I'm full of shit where I actually, I was like, dang like that's like an interesting like way of describing that or like that was an interesting little addition or like insight into the situation that I thought was like semi legitimate, you know what I mean?

00;04;41;17 - 00;04;44;18
Dylan
So I couldn't just it's like tougher. I don't know.

00;04;45;05 - 00;04;46;20
Phil
I just let that one go.

00;04;47;06 - 00;05;03;08
Dylan
Yeah. You know, it's like it kind of it recontextualized the whole thing really like shit. Am I like, dunking too hard? Like, and then you're like, you'll get to the next part and you're like, no, like, no, maybe not. No. And hey, hey, dunk this strong word. I like you. Oh, my God.

00;05;03;08 - 00;05;07;13
Kevin
America runs on Duncan, and so does this podcast.

00;05;07;13 - 00;05;08;16
Phil
You're damn right.

00;05;09;15 - 00;05;10;09
Kevin
God damn.

00;05;10;09 - 00;05;11;04
Dylan
Capitalism.

00;05;11;11 - 00;05;19;10
Kevin
Yeah, capitalism, man. Fuck it. And finishing my coffee.

00;05;19;10 - 00;05;23;28
Dylan
Also low key. Duncan is really good. Like, we don't have that in here.

00;05;24;11 - 00;05;25;15
Kevin
I don't know. You don't have.

00;05;26;00 - 00;05;32;03
Dylan
No man like there. Occasionally you will find one. But they are rare. Yeah, we have our between.

00;05;32;03 - 00;05;36;02
Kevin
We have Dunkin Donuts. It's it's pretty much up and down the East Coast now, I believe.

00;05;36;04 - 00;05;36;13
Dylan
So you're.

00;05;36;17 - 00;05;37;27
Kevin
Pretty sure? Yeah.

00;05;37;27 - 00;05;46;10
Dylan
It's like I feel like maybe they start having Dunkin at the the whatever the divider line where Carl's Jr becomes Hardee's. Yeah. Yeah. That's what's up with that.

00;05;46;15 - 00;05;49;09
Kevin
The Carl's Junior Hardee's crossover. Yeah. Yeah.

00;05;49;13 - 00;05;50;14
Dylan
Is disappeared.

00;05;51;09 - 00;06;03;06
Kevin
Anyway, Dunkin's appear in the while. It's in chapter ten fights actually it's two dudes in chapter ten and they nearly kill him, but they don't. And he wins again.

00;06;04;03 - 00;06;05;20
Phil
There's no beating this guy.

00;06;05;20 - 00;06;29;23
Kevin
Yeah, there's no beating this guy. He just keeps on winning. He just keeps on fucking winning, man. And this is this is what happens, Larry. This is what happens when you beat a stranger in the Alps. He enters the castle, and in chapter 11, he beats the shit out of some thieves. There's a room with. With thieves just dancing around in it there.

00;06;30;03 - 00;06;44;10
Kevin
I bet they were probably they were probably having some sort of like prayer ritual to the thief God. And he just comes in and interrupts and he just, like, picks one up and he throws it again. He bobs some hard. He throws one against the wall.

00;06;44;28 - 00;06;46;13
Dylan
Oh, man, I'm really sorry.

00;06;46;17 - 00;07;00;17
Kevin
No, I mean, it's worse than usual. And we've had a lot of. I'm making it up. Okay, it's. Yeah, I'm just. I'm just adding my own flavor to it now because I think that would be if you went like full Patrick Bateman. I think that would be fun. Well.

00;07;01;18 - 00;07;18;03
Phil
It certainly would really the fourth or fifth like scene or book where like he's he's I go and beat some beefs up and it's like, we don't need more of that. Why are you doing this to us? Why? It's already. It really is. Look, it doesn't need padding.

00;07;18;03 - 00;07;33;22
Dylan
Yes. It's like. Well, because the actual reason is because these and I, I again, I'm assuming this because I'm not even played Goldman Sachs long enough to have used these potions. But it's very clear that the potions are supposed to be, you know, a major mechanic where like the more.

00;07;33;22 - 00;07;36;12
Kevin
Potions, they're like the supers. Yeah. So it's like.

00;07;36;12 - 00;07;43;08
Dylan
I get this mini potions and that allows me to do, you know, the more potions I have, the better my attack is, the better the.

00;07;43;08 - 00;07;44;08
Phil
Magic attack is.

00;07;44;08 - 00;07;59;19
Dylan
Yeah, yes. Yeah. And so I assumed because we got so many, it's like, yeah, we need to hear exactly when he gets these potions because the potions most of the time come up in the battles. He's like, Here's when I use my potions and something crazy happens, and then it explains how he's able to beat them or whatever.

00;08;00;08 - 00;08;17;07
Dylan
But there are in this castle, there are moments in which I swear to God, it just goes like and then he use the potions in one. Yeah. So, so if that's the case, then you're absolutely right. It feels like I don't need to hear about the potions that if you're if we've now gotten to that point where we're just scooting right along and it's not that I.

00;08;17;09 - 00;08;42;23
Phil
Literally there are so many moments exactly that moment where I'm just. Yes. Joining him, like playing the game, throwing the potions because he does like he does this dramatic, like, lift thing. And then I go and and he, like, does it. And you're just watching the screen and you see pause and it cuts to this guy put his genesis controller down like that and then he Yeah.

00;08;43;13 - 00;08;50;08
Phil
Use the potions the one I was like.

00;08;51;17 - 00;08;51;29
Dylan
Yes.

00;08;53;13 - 00;09;22;24
Kevin
That is, that's pretty much how it happens. If you read the first letter of every sentence, it it spells out spells a little bonus scene of that. So continuing on in Chapter 11, he overhears General Hartland, which is actually a character, is the general Hartland is talking to some of his soldiers and and the king and the princess are tied up to the ceiling.

00;09;23;27 - 00;09;46;06
Kevin
They're they're in chains up they're up in the ceiling. And ax breaks in on this conversation. And he butts fucks these guys up. They're dead. It beats it. Just just bam kills them. But then, holy shit, deathadder shows up. Oh, my God, it's death adder. We're chapter 11. We're five chapters out, and we're getting death chatter already. That's that's surprising.

00;09;46;06 - 00;09;52;18
Kevin
And Darth Vader absolutely wrecks him. Just just wrecks him. Insert more quarters, please.

00;09;53;00 - 00;09;56;01
Dylan
But it's.

00;09;56;01 - 00;09;57;17
Phil
Really what it does come down to.

00;09;58;23 - 00;09;59;03
Kevin
This.

00;09;59;26 - 00;10;02;04
Dylan
This battle that. Oh, sorry. Go ahead, Kevin.

00;10;02;11 - 00;10;04;04
Kevin
No, no, go, go ahead, go, go.

00;10;04;04 - 00;10;26;22
Dylan
Say it. Go. This is where one of my favorite like probably my favorite like exchange happens. Like actual dialog exchange. It's between death adder and I'm said gold max ax battle or the father says he says you will pay dearly for the trouble you've caused me. AX battler Oh yes, I know who you are and why you're here.

00;10;26;22 - 00;10;34;22
Dylan
But I shall not allow an impudent flea to get in the way of my conquest of Uriah, which is like, you know, not bad, I guess. Whatever.

00;10;34;25 - 00;10;35;07
Kevin
Fine.

00;10;35;10 - 00;10;44;15
Dylan
An ax, an impudent flea. I may be sad ax, but this flea intends to kill the dog. Upon whose back it sits, not merely tossing.

00;10;44;15 - 00;10;45;27
Kevin
The dog to scratch.

00;10;46;28 - 00;10;47;12
Dylan
I was like.

00;10;47;20 - 00;10;47;26
Dylan
Oh.

00;10;49;16 - 00;10;53;29
Phil
That's going on. That's going up. That's going up on the sun quote on Twitter.

00;10;53;29 - 00;10;54;19
Dylan
Yes. Yeah.

00;10;54;23 - 00;10;57;04
Kevin
It's so that is that sure is.

00;10;58;03 - 00;11;02;20
Dylan
Yes. I do not mean to dunk. It's just it's so funny and like it's.

00;11;02;26 - 00;11;07;18
Kevin
It's a beautiful line. Oh, you know, I'm going to yes, I'm going to unironically say I love that.

00;11;07;24 - 00;11;10;17
Phil
It is actually a good line. Yeah, it's.

00;11;10;17 - 00;11;17;27
Kevin
Sure that is somebody who read them and and or maybe watched the movies and was like.

00;11;18;14 - 00;11;22;15
Dylan
Missing that cultural context. And this I never read the books. I've seen the movies. The movies.

00;11;22;16 - 00;11;24;04
Phil
So don't worry about the.

00;11;24;07 - 00;11;27;29
Dylan
Oh, yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. The movies are you know.

00;11;28;06 - 00;11;32;04
Phil
If you walk the dog, then the Hollywood, you know.

00;11;32;04 - 00;11;38;01
Dylan
Yes, it's like that. The sound of like six different voices that would always be on at my dad's house. I mean.

00;11;38;10 - 00;11;38;25
Dylan
Like in.

00;11;40;04 - 00;11;42;08
Dylan
That one in Dante's.

00;11;42;08 - 00;11;45;07
Dylan
Peak.

00;11;45;07 - 00;11;46;06
Dylan
It's another classic.

00;11;48;13 - 00;11;50;08
Kevin
God, Dante's Peak.

00;11;52;09 - 00;11;54;29
Dylan
Podcast episode. We can't oh, oh, my gosh.

00;11;56;05 - 00;12;08;18
Kevin
We've talked about disastrous elements and how they happen in pairs. Uh huh, yeah. They they tend to happen in pairs with Dante's Peak. What was that.

00;12;08;23 - 00;12;11;21
Phil
It was with the with was just called volcano.

00;12;12;21 - 00;12;16;11
Dylan
That is the one.

00;12;16;11 - 00;12;20;19
Kevin
I think so. I think I think. Yeah. So and.

00;12;20;21 - 00;12;21;09
Dylan
Dante's because.

00;12;22;08 - 00;12;23;12
Kevin
Yeah. That's the one. Yeah.

00;12;23;25 - 00;12;25;00
Dylan
Okay it was. And then the.

00;12;25;07 - 00;12;27;07
Kevin
Volcano, the other one's just called volcano.

00;12;27;15 - 00;12;28;17
Dylan
Oh yeah. There you go.

00;12;29;20 - 00;12;40;00
Kevin
They both came out in 1997. That's Tommy Lee Jones is in Volcano and I'm a Pierce Brosnan. Yeah, it was a deep impact. Armageddon.

00;12;40;13 - 00;12;44;27
Dylan
Oh, yeah. Holy crap. I never. They were like that, right? In the same area.

00;12;44;27 - 00;12;45;09
Phil
Oh yeah.

00;12;45;09 - 00;12;48;25
Kevin
Oh, the movies happen in I'm you.

00;12;50;06 - 00;12;50;23
Dylan
Actually.

00;12;51;03 - 00;13;09;02
Dylan
Did I mean fill you in already both of you would actually like know this already. But when I did, when I was like a script intern for a little bit, my sick, unpaid, the first job that I had out of school and I worked for actually I don't know if you should believe I worked for BLEEP. Yes. I don't want to give you additional editing.

00;13;09;02 - 00;13;32;23
Dylan
I worked for somebody who was a producer and used to, you know, had enough clout, at least at the time, to kind of like get the same scripts as like, you know, WME and Sia CAA. And I wonder if that doesn't happen because, you know, you would get a script that would come across your desk and maybe like either you would pass on it because you thought you could do it better or someone else picked it up and you thought it actually had potential.

00;13;32;23 - 00;13;35;26
Dylan
And then you kind of. Yeah. Had a writer come in and make yours. Is that why.

00;13;36;01 - 00;13;47;10
Kevin
I wouldn't be. I wouldn't be surprised if it's like, oh, shit, there's a like we wanted this one. There was a little bit of a bidding war. Yeah, FOX got it. But WB We can.

00;13;47;10 - 00;13;48;11
Dylan
Still do it right?

00;13;48;13 - 00;13;56;25
Kevin
We can still do it. The idea like it's not like the idea is broad enough that we can do it still. So I think that he's.

00;13;56;25 - 00;14;13;00
Dylan
Like that deuce dick measuring big people to not to again that's why you got to bleep. Yeah nice guy but you know, certainly yes. It's like you mean that fucking guy over it w I mean, he's going to get to make myself think, so I'm gonna make it better.

00;14;13;00 - 00;14;13;10
Phil
Yeah.

00;14;14;05 - 00;14;17;09
Kevin
Yes, I think so. We're making a deep impact. Yeah.

00;14;17;12 - 00;14;22;25
Dylan
Which it's like. And it's going to be people are going to love this way more than Armageddon, for sure.

00;14;22;25 - 00;14;23;06
Dylan
Yeah.

00;14;23;22 - 00;14;31;13
Kevin
Yeah. We're going to make a really somber movie about a meteor impact and and and people are going.

00;14;31;13 - 00;14;32;21
Dylan
To love Liv Tyler. Yeah.

00;14;32;26 - 00;14;34;03
Phil
That's why people are like.

00;14;34;24 - 00;14;38;10
Kevin
Yeah, it's not going to have Liv Tyler or Aerosmith.

00;14;38;10 - 00;14;43;16
Phil
No, nothing. Nothing you can enjoy or actually be part it.

00;14;44;06 - 00;14;45;24
Kevin
It's going to have telephony.

00;14;46;01 - 00;14;46;13
Phil
So.

00;14;47;03 - 00;14;47;25
Dylan
Oh, my God.

00;14;48;07 - 00;14;48;24
Phil
There's that.

00;14;49;26 - 00;14;50;14
Dylan
Wild.

00;14;52;21 - 00;14;54;19
Dylan
Asteroid wars of 1997.

00;14;55;07 - 00;14;56;12
Kevin
1997.

00;14;56;28 - 00;14;59;08
Dylan
I think that's what you guys said. I could be wrong. I don't know.

00;14;59;29 - 00;15;02;14
Dylan
Anyway, something that was like.

00;15;02;21 - 00;15;04;11
Dylan
That ash ash battle here.

00;15;04;15 - 00;15;39;02
Kevin
Was Ash. Bowdler continues. He he gets he gets destroyed. And then he gets up and he uses some potions to kill the skeletons. But Death Adder still has him on the ropes at the end of Chapter 11. It's a it's a cliffhanger. And till you turn the page and it's not anymore, because the princess the princess screams and it startles death adder and ax able to dodge out of the way and fight and kill death adder.

00;15;39;02 - 00;15;42;11
Kevin
And that is that's the end of death adder.

00;15;43;03 - 00;15;46;03
Dylan
It's really like the way it is now. It's the.

00;15;46;04 - 00;15;57;20
Kevin
Super lame. He rescues the he rescues the king and the princess. And the king mentions death adder was not the final bad guy and that the real villain is behind.

00;15;57;28 - 00;15;59;25
Phil
The Iron Curtain and.

00;16;00;29 - 00;16;04;16
Dylan
Yeah.

00;16;04;16 - 00;16;10;10
Kevin
I was all right. When AX notices how hot the princess is before considering.

00;16;10;26 - 00;16;12;25
Phil
The man is a man of me.

00;16;12;26 - 00;16;18;29
Kevin
Of course he's he's a man and he's been he's gone days without.

00;16;19;15 - 00;16;22;09
Dylan
They did what they gave him. Yeah. Yeah.

00;16;22;17 - 00;16;24;25
Dylan
You're right. It has been.

00;16;25;06 - 00;16;50;13
Dylan
All week long. I do. I remember there was a part there. It's like I guess this is kind of the, you know, the the like he's not like an unthinking brute, but like just about where at one point I just remember it saying, I'm trying to find it now where he like, like glint. Like it's like their eyes met, but then he like, looked away and it's like, oh, you know, he's respectful and like, he doesn't want to linger for too long.

00;16;50;13 - 00;17;05;25
Dylan
And then like, you know, like a paragraph later, it's like, like their eyes met again. And this time he did not look away. And this was when he realized, like, how beautiful the princess is. I'm not reading that verbatim, but I bet you if I'm trying to find it, it's like just about verbatim.

00;17;05;25 - 00;17;07;12
Kevin
So it's pretty much that.

00;17;07;12 - 00;17;18;25
Dylan
Yes, it's like they're not going to quite get away without commenting on how the princess is super hot. But that was I feel like the attempt to to make him only 60% gross instead of. All right. You know what I mean?

00;17;19;25 - 00;17;21;24
Phil
We're just like the editor.

00;17;21;24 - 00;17;25;18
Dylan
And what was this publishing like? I guess I shouldn't be again.

00;17;26;07 - 00;17;28;06
Kevin
Well, the game was the book party.

00;17;28;06 - 00;17;29;04
Dylan
I mean, the.

00;17;29;20 - 00;17;31;14
Kevin
Book was.

00;17;31;20 - 00;17;34;26
Dylan
I want to say I can find Cosmo. Continue. I'll find it.

00;17;34;26 - 00;17;56;26
Kevin
Yeah, yeah, continue. He he goes in, he goes right into that door and there's a he's now in a dark past. He is, there's only the path is only four feet wide. And as he's walking, there's people attacking him and he's like, aha, you can't hit meaning like dodging out of the way. And these people are falling off the edge of the of the thing.

00;17;57;05 - 00;18;17;26
Kevin
And it's it's very much a final boss area that he's he's walking into. And that's that's chapter 13 and and continues on it's chapter 14. He's just walking you noticing that there's these statues on on the walls and the statues are like the statues of the bad dudes that he's been he's been fighting.

00;18;17;26 - 00;18;21;16
Phil
It's a hall of defeat, basically.

00;18;21;16 - 00;18;43;27
Kevin
It's a hall of defeat. Yeah. And he gets, uh. He is. Suddenly the statues come alive and start attacking him, and he's not able to destroy them with his sword. Skull crusher fails him, but he does push them over the edge. Except he himself falls over the edge. Oh, no. What's a boy to do?

00;18;44;14 - 00;18;44;19
Phil
Uh.

00;18;45;02 - 00;18;45;24
Kevin
What's a boy to do?

00;18;46;26 - 00;18;47;19
Dylan
It's like, I know.

00;18;47;19 - 00;18;49;29
Kevin
Dylan, did you find out? Let's. Let's pause.

00;18;49;29 - 00;18;51;24
Dylan
This was published in 1992.

00;18;52;17 - 00;18;54;01
Kevin
So, what, two years again?

00;18;54;05 - 00;18;59;24
Dylan
Yeah, two years afterwards and very early nineties. And we all know the nineties. So again. Oh we're well.

00;18;59;24 - 00;19;00;24
Kevin
Aware of the nineties.

00;19;00;24 - 00;19;09;21
Dylan
Yeah. Yes I'll, I'll rescind the degree, the, the idea it's like does someone get credit, you know, it's like where you want to make your character's 40%. That's gross. In 1992.

00;19;09;21 - 00;19;25;20
Phil
ABC editors I mean the draft that used the term Teddy me instead it would have like we we feel we're like several points for accuracy but we're hoping to be less. Yes, if possible.

00;19;26;10 - 00;19;27;12
Dylan
Yeah, yes.

00;19;28;21 - 00;19;40;14
Kevin
Yeah. And we can't we also can't say that her the clap of her ass cheeks, was alerting the guards. We got to we got to strike that a.

00;19;40;15 - 00;19;44;18
Phil
Remember that our fathers write their kids. It's tough to watch that.

00;19;44;18 - 00;19;47;12
Kevin
Yeah. Yeah, Colonel. Yeah.

00;19;48;28 - 00;19;49;13
Dylan
Wow. Wow.

00;19;50;11 - 00;20;02;06
Dylan
That was really good. Just so you know what that was like, if I had my eyes closed, I would have been like, What's damn dude?

00;20;02;06 - 00;20;02;21
Dylan
You know?

00;20;03;05 - 00;20;05;01
Dylan
Yeah, I swear to God, I'm serious.

00;20;05;01 - 00;20;05;28
Phil
That's trying to.

00;20;05;28 - 00;20;12;05
Kevin
Sleep around, but. But I'm dummy thick and that my ass cheeks is alerting the guards.

00;20;12;12 - 00;20;13;20
Dylan
That know it's classic.

00;20;14;03 - 00;20;19;27
Dylan
I can't believe that I was like, Phil, you're aware, you know, that he can do we both we both.

00;20;19;27 - 00;20;24;26
Phil
Have gotten better. I've got about a dozen voices in each and that's his best. What I opinion.

00;20;24;26 - 00;20;25;24
Dylan
I oh man.

00;20;26;10 - 00;20;42;15
Kevin
We did, we did we. Well we did a metal gear book and so half the time I was talking as soon as the snake got what I could and every time. Ah. Guest On that episode, Jesse Guerrasio has just got damn it.

00;20;43;03 - 00;20;43;26
Dylan
Yeah, that's good.

00;20;45;13 - 00;20;48;29
Dylan
That's solid, boy. It's got to be hard.

00;20;49;11 - 00;20;52;09
Kevin
This continues. Yeah, yeah, it's actually happening.

00;20;52;10 - 00;20;53;07
Dylan
It's like, no, I.

00;20;53;07 - 00;20;55;23
Kevin
Don't know how. I don't know how David hated David hated.

00;20;55;24 - 00;20;56;09
Dylan
Yes.

00;20;56;10 - 00;20;59;06
Kevin
How however many recording sessions he does it for.

00;20;59;13 - 00;21;01;12
Dylan
Yes. You know, people constant.

00;21;01;19 - 00;21;25;24
Kevin
So, uh, ex pulls himself up and gets his sword back. Hey, now, Topher. Hey. Two for one. He then encounters two gold plated giants, and he's able to get them to fall off the edge. And he doesn't. He's able to he's able to do the the RPG player in all of us. What we all do is we hoard potions.

00;21;26;06 - 00;21;32;11
Kevin
We got to get that counter. We got to get that counter up to 99 before we get to the final boss. Um.

00;21;32;27 - 00;21;37;15
Dylan
Then when he says specifically, he's like, I didn't want to use my potions. Yeah. In case any later.

00;21;37;15 - 00;21;41;21
Kevin
In case I needed them. That's it. That's the ax battlers. A true gamer. That's right.

00;21;41;21 - 00;21;43;00
Dylan
Absolutely. Never told you.

00;21;43;08 - 00;21;43;29
Phil
That. Never will.

00;21;44;10 - 00;21;54;01
Kevin
Yes, he's he he finished Final Fantasy seven with 99 mega potions in his obituary of all. So first gold bag of Phenix down.

00;21;54;09 - 00;21;56;27
Dylan
Yes.

00;21;56;27 - 00;21;58;14
Kevin
And I wrote in my notes. Good for him.

00;21;59;14 - 00;22;00;26
Dylan
Yeah, man, it's a hard choice.

00;22;00;26 - 00;22;01;21
Phil
Six Discipline.

00;22;02;08 - 00;22;07;26
Kevin
Yes, it does take discipline. Yeah. Chip And then in chapter 16, we meet Death Bringer.

00;22;08;04 - 00;22;22;13
Phil
All right, real quick. Yeah, go for it to day. When I read this book that and I read Death Bringer, it was the first time I put together that. Death Adder is not he's not.

00;22;22;15 - 00;22;23;10
Kevin
Only a snake.

00;22;23;10 - 00;22;27;28
Phil
Snake. He's named that. He adds up. Death's basically.

00;22;27;28 - 00;22;28;24
Kevin
Adds death.

00;22;28;24 - 00;22;39;17
Phil
Yeah based on death bringer because he brings that well with a name like ax Battler. I refuse to believe that that's not the case. It's.

00;22;39;17 - 00;22;40;01
Dylan
I mean, you.

00;22;40;07 - 00;22;40;19
Kevin
Must be.

00;22;40;19 - 00;22;43;00
Phil
Right out.

00;22;43;00 - 00;22;47;15
Dylan
Yeah, dude, I think because there's not a single reference to anything snake. Like, at.

00;22;47;20 - 00;22;50;15
Kevin
Any point, there's no snake or no. Holy shit.

00;22;51;05 - 00;22;53;27
Phil
He would have been called killed. Doer.

00;22;54;08 - 00;22;54;15
Dylan
Yeah.

00;22;54;29 - 00;22;55;20
Kevin
Kill Doer.

00;22;55;20 - 00;22;56;17
Dylan
Kill Maker.

00;22;57;02 - 00;23;01;02
Kevin
Yeah, I'd like his like I kind of like kill maker. I would actually.

00;23;01;04 - 00;23;01;15
Phil
Kill Mike.

00;23;01;17 - 00;23;07;03
Kevin
Unironically. I and ironically am now going to write a story with a villain kill maker.

00;23;07;04 - 00;23;07;15
Phil
I like.

00;23;07;19 - 00;23;09;16
Dylan
Him. I can't believe that I.

00;23;09;16 - 00;23;10;20
Phil
In that ridiculous.

00;23;10;20 - 00;23;14;00
Dylan
Yes, that is absolutely insane. I'm just a journalist today.

00;23;14;00 - 00;23;15;27
Kevin
You maker's in the next room. Yeah.

00;23;16;27 - 00;23;21;11
Dylan
Exactly. Jesus. I'm more embarrassed that I just didn't put that together at all.

00;23;21;11 - 00;23;31;11
Kevin
I read the whole I. I had that was weird. That that anybody after. Yeah, yeah. After when I got death bringer when I had the same thought. When I got the Death Bringer, I was like, Wait a minute.

00;23;31;18 - 00;23;33;04
Phil
Wait, bringer here.

00;23;33;24 - 00;23;37;01
Kevin
He's not like Death Cobra. He's Death Brain.

00;23;37;01 - 00;23;40;25
Dylan
Yeah, yeah, yes, yeah. I guess. Yeah. No other references in any of the other names that.

00;23;41;01 - 00;23;43;25
Phil
He's that he's the half brother of life's attractor.

00;23;44;12 - 00;23;49;05
Dylan
Yeah. I've stretch, too. We're dogs, too.

00;23;50;20 - 00;23;56;24
Kevin
So he remembers his friend Alex. Do you remember Alex? Oh, does anybody else remember Alex?

00;23;56;24 - 00;23;59;16
Phil
He was so well-defined and written about so well.

00;23;59;16 - 00;24;11;18
Kevin
Defines you as friends. You have best friends. Are you a bad enough dude to avenge your best friend? He is. Yeah, he. He sure is. Wow. It kills BRIGER.

00;24;11;19 - 00;24;25;20
Dylan
Really? Just, like, hit the same notes these games. Yeah. Oh, they always do in the game. He's like like a do the you talk to you for, like, 3 seconds, like at the very beginning of the game and yeah, I would match up with that's that's Double Dragon. Are you bad enough, dude?

00;24;25;26 - 00;24;26;17
Phil
No, that's.

00;24;26;17 - 00;24;27;25
Kevin
No, that's bad dudes.

00;24;28;00 - 00;24;28;07
Dylan
Oh.

00;24;28;22 - 00;24;30;11
Phil
Well yeah. I should have. Right.

00;24;30;27 - 00;24;32;07
Dylan
Might be on that one.

00;24;32;20 - 00;24;33;18
Dylan
I mean it was one of them.

00;24;34;23 - 00;24;36;06
Dylan
I guess I should have assumed.

00;24;36;21 - 00;24;36;24
Kevin
A.

00;24;36;28 - 00;24;38;17
Dylan
Double egg on my face over the course.

00;24;38;17 - 00;24;39;08
Dylan
Of, you know.

00;24;39;16 - 00;24;44;00
Dylan
3 minutes. Death adder and bad dudes. I'll see you guys later. Are you a.

00;24;44;00 - 00;24;51;24
Kevin
Bad enough dude to say President Ronnie? And, like, honestly, the answer is no. You should probably leave your bad phone.

00;24;51;24 - 00;24;53;15
Dylan
You let him die. How about that?

00;24;53;15 - 00;24;56;04
Kevin
Let's leave Ronnie for the Sandinistas.

00;24;58;21 - 00;24;59;02
Dylan
Into.

00;24;59;17 - 00;25;00;25
Dylan
Exile as a man.

00;25;02;06 - 00;25;02;21
Dylan
Himself.

00;25;03;16 - 00;25;31;24
Kevin
But fuck it. So he gives. He gets the ax, gives it back to the king, and he leaves the castle without saying a word for some reason. And he throws on a pair of sunglasses and we hear off in the distance, you and Bob O'Reilly starts playing and that's the end of that. Yeah, that's the end of it.

00;25;32;00 - 00;25;33;11
Kevin
Or is it question mark.

00;25;33;18 - 00;25;34;27
Dylan
That's right. It does end that way.

00;25;34;27 - 00;25;47;12
Phil
That's right. It literally does the or because he's just woven this tapestry of a world for us. How could we not be champing at the bit to find out what happens next?

00;25;47;24 - 00;25;48;08
Dylan
Yes.

00;25;48;08 - 00;25;54;21
Kevin
Or is it and I urge you to find out more at your local library.

00;25;55;28 - 00;26;00;06
Dylan
Do you guys know if he actually made a sequel to this one? Because I will read it on my own time.

00;26;00;09 - 00;26;01;01
Dylan
I me.

00;26;02;10 - 00;26;09;20
Phil
I believe I believe the five are all that we got. I think that it was it was it was a much shorter series in the Worlds of Power book.

00;26;10;15 - 00;26;16;13
Kevin
But you don't have to take my word for it now that's that's a reading rainbow reference.

00;26;18;02 - 00;26;21;03
Phil
Now question did we get a reading list at the end of this one?

00;26;21;28 - 00;26;22;29
Kevin
I believe we did not.

00;26;22;29 - 00;26;23;11
Phil
All right.

00;26;23;22 - 00;26;24;05
Kevin
Is there.

00;26;24;23 - 00;26;26;27
Phil
Automatically inferior? That's all there.

00;26;26;27 - 00;26;39;10
Dylan
Is. Okay. Well, I hold on. I might be betraying my ignorance. This might be me. You know, getting dunked on three times in 4 minutes. But we do get a list of other books that he's made at the end. Is that a reading list?

00;26;39;11 - 00;27;08;07
Phil
No, no. Well, what we're referencing is at the end of World of Power Books, The Nintendo Ones, Ethics nine, our dear close and personal friend of the Pod, Seth Godin, would have an actual list. If you liked this, you might want to and you go and it would be hilarious because it would go from like totally appropriate for kids stuff to fucking Heinlein and the man.

00;27;08;08 - 00;27;08;24
Phil
Yeah.

00;27;08;25 - 00;27;17;03
Kevin
So like yeah yeah, yeah. Robert Heinlein, like, not Starship Troopers, but something else that Heinlein wrote and and.

00;27;17;25 - 00;27;18;25
Dylan
That's the only one I know.

00;27;19;07 - 00;27;22;04
Kevin
Yeah. Check out. Check out. I got like three.

00;27;22;17 - 00;27;22;27
Dylan
Man.

00;27;23;03 - 00;27;30;17
Kevin
If you like Megaman two, why don't you check out? I have no mouth and I must scream right now. Children of.

00;27;30;17 - 00;27;31;06
Dylan
The corn.

00;27;31;06 - 00;27;38;03
Phil
If you if you if you enjoy ninja games, why not try out fascism? Fascism Fascism by Robert Kaplan.

00;27;38;16 - 00;27;54;14
Dylan
Yeah, it's like, you know, it's important for our children to have a breadth of knowledge about all different kind. Well, you know, and while he's a fascist, I get it, you know, I mean, now he's got an army of robots that I'm sure that all the fascists would love to have.

00;27;54;16 - 00;28;02;26
Phil
Yep. It's very appropriate, kind of. It's. It is a battle for the ages. It's a weird battle because Megaman is a cop. So it's the.

00;28;02;26 - 00;28;06;08
Dylan
Harry Potter cabin. One of the Harry Potter conversations. Yeah.

00;28;06;13 - 00;28;08;05
Phil
I mean.

00;28;08;05 - 00;28;10;03
Dylan
It's if you like ninja guide to.

00;28;11;10 - 00;28;13;17
Kevin
Read Shogun by James Clavell with.

00;28;14;19 - 00;28;15;22
Dylan
A Heart of Darkness.

00;28;16;08 - 00;28;18;23
Kevin
I've read Shogun have you have you read Shogun films?

00;28;18;28 - 00;28;20;02
Phil
I never read Shogun.

00;28;20;18 - 00;28;21;27
Kevin
It is a long fucking book.

00;28;21;27 - 00;28;37;13
Phil
Yeah, I think it was one of the only books I've ever seen, you'll see, because I basically live at used bookstores and it's one of the only books I've ever seen. And you'll see that used bookstores all the time where it's in two volumes. Yeah, usually they just, it's.

00;28;37;13 - 00;28;39;25
Kevin
A it's a double VHS cassette book.

00;28;39;25 - 00;28;40;27
Phil
Right, exactly.

00;28;41;16 - 00;28;43;14
Kevin
You have to change the tape midway through your book.

00;28;43;19 - 00;28;45;02
Dylan
It's like the.

00;28;47;13 - 00;28;56;04
Dylan
How long are we talking here? Like approximately. I mean, yeah, I've seen I feel like I've seen these books go like 1700 pages and like, no, still put it in one, you know. So it's kind of.

00;28;56;04 - 00;29;01;12
Phil
Like this, like, I mean, seven. I saw that I feel like 1500 pages might not be for long.

00;29;01;26 - 00;29;05;28
Kevin
The word count is 425,000 words.

00;29;05;28 - 00;29;06;11
Phil
Yeah.

00;29;06;11 - 00;29;08;01
Dylan
Oh, my God.

00;29;08;20 - 00;29;24;12
Kevin
Now, for reference, the the the the line for a novel for something that is a novel is like 50 to 75, depending on your view. We are looking at 50 to 75 is like the low end for like for a Great.

00;29;24;12 - 00;29;26;21
Phil
Gatsby I think was like 47.

00;29;27;09 - 00;29;34;09
Kevin
If yeah, great Gatsby is pushing it. A Great Gatsby is like closer to a novella, but, you know, we're not going to hold that at all.

00;29;34;09 - 00;29;37;12
Phil
But I'm just like for page count and everything, you know, over there.

00;29;37;12 - 00;29;44;20
Kevin
But yeah, yeah, yeah. So Shogun is so the word count is 425,000.

00;29;44;22 - 00;29;48;13
Phil
Jesus Christ.

00;29;48;13 - 00;29;55;04
Kevin
Excuse me, that's 1152 pages. But that really depends on how you're typeset in that bad boy.

00;29;55;16 - 00;30;20;13
Dylan
Yeah. Yeah, I just did some basic math here based on, you know, the average kind of words per minute that a person can read and you're taught, you're looking at approximately, oh, wait a second. Okay. 425,000 divided by says the average here is about 240 words per minute. So the end result is 1770. That would be ours. That would be minutes.

00;30;21;07 - 00;30;21;29
Kevin
That'd be minutes.

00;30;22;10 - 00;30;29;02
Dylan
Okay, let's guide this by 60. It's a 30 hour book. That's 38 hours of you. That's.

00;30;29;07 - 00;30;41;20
Kevin
That's your Stephen. That's your basic, you know, that's like the stand. It's probably about the comparable I guess I have to the stand. And it and some of the other books that Stephen King wrote before he gave up amphetamines.

00;30;43;26 - 00;30;46;09
Phil
So the easier to read than Atlas Shrugged.

00;30;46;13 - 00;30;51;08
Kevin
Still easier to read than Atlas Shrugged. You read Atlas Shrugged, right? Yeah, you did.

00;30;51;08 - 00;30;52;10
Dylan
Yeah. Yes. I meant.

00;30;52;24 - 00;30;53;24
Kevin
Capitalism and.

00;30;53;26 - 00;30;55;08
Phil
Fucking fucking capital.

00;30;55;25 - 00;30;57;11
Dylan
Oh, and they all actually read it. I love.

00;30;57;11 - 00;30;57;24
Phil
That show.

00;30;57;24 - 00;31;00;07
Dylan
So fucking great concept here.

00;31;00;12 - 00;31;08;09
Kevin
Final, final, final, final thoughts on this book. Oh, Phil, let you go first. What's what's your.

00;31;09;17 - 00;31;48;06
Phil
I would say this is the second to worst of the if you like you said, if we're putting these the world power saga game books all on their own little shall they get I I'd say that this is the only thing that this is better than would be Megaman two. Yep I got a because episode. Jeez you're going to love how we we we did it with Scott and it was it's it it whereas Megaman two literally was just like this happened this happened this happened with one or two inexplicable add ons like he's.

00;31;48;06 - 00;31;48;17
Kevin
Human.

00;31;48;17 - 00;32;02;09
Phil
Now they make him human for like doctor light's like, Whoa, step into this machine, and it'll actually improve your powers. Oops. It didn't do that, but it did make you human, damn it. And that's never addressed it.

00;32;02;09 - 00;32;03;11
Kevin
Same again.

00;32;04;24 - 00;32;06;02
Dylan
Yeah.

00;32;06;02 - 00;32;35;25
Phil
And so this one, this one isn't. It's still very cut and dry, very straightforward. But we do have these interesting like the turtle conversation six in my head the eagle even even the even the, the weird shit with the, the fucking oh, the fatty thing. I'm like, just killing it. It's bad, but it's like, weird. Like, it. It keeps you, like, think like what the fuck is going on with this book?

00;32;37;04 - 00;32;45;05
Phil
So it's but but still that puts it at our, in my opinion, our third worst book we've ever read.

00;32;45;14 - 00;32;46;00
Dylan
Gotcha.

00;32;46;27 - 00;32;53;09
Kevin
Yeah. Yeah. Um, depending on how we're, you're talking about overall rankings if we're merging.

00;32;53;09 - 00;32;59;10
Phil
The overall, I would say if I, if I were taking those out of the shelf and individually sorting.

00;32;59;10 - 00;32;59;25
Kevin
Them. Yeah.

00;33;00;15 - 00;33;26;01
Phil
Sorting them because megaman two and and dead space murder I say or dead force for worse because whereas dead space murder is a far better written book in terms of I know how to write a novel. It is it is one of the most boring stupid just like yeah, lawn. And it's like, this is dead space, for God's sake.

00;33;26;01 - 00;33;32;02
Dylan
Like, you have a lot to work with that that's the kind of thing that would frustrate me versus something like this, which is just.

00;33;33;05 - 00;33;46;02
Phil
It took it took an hour to read right now. So yeah. Yeah. So yeah. I guess what I'm saying is ax didn't give it to me.

00;33;46;02 - 00;33;51;11
Dylan
Oh, shit. And yeah.

00;33;52;00 - 00;34;15;17
Kevin
Oh man I wish I had was too. That's if I had that song I, I'm going to just start adding that song to my soundboard so I can just play it whatever, whatever that happens, it's never going to happen again. But just in case you're ready, just be ready because I'll be ready and hold on.

00;34;15;18 - 00;34;16;28
Phil
Dylan. Dylan, what did you think?

00;34;16;28 - 00;34;26;06
Dylan
But I mean, really, I would echo, you know, pretty I mean, I mean, I read those other books. I thought oh, they're in there.

00;34;26;06 - 00;34;30;22
Kevin
And there's they said, I'm always like 5 minutes too late on school.

00;34;31;14 - 00;34;46;18
Dylan
Which actually makes it better, you know what I mean? It's like that episode of It's Always Sunny where they're, like, making fun of or like they, you know, say something and then like, like a minute later, he's like, and that's why. And then, like, she's stupid, right? Or like something like that. And they're like, Yeah, what.

00;34;47;12 - 00;34;48;12
Dylan
If this is like.

00;34;48;12 - 00;35;11;29
Dylan
Why what you said before? And they're like, Oh my God, your comedic timing is so bad. Like, so it's like even funnier because I really do love that show that I thought so like I really, I enjoyed this book completely as like, you know, the type of book that we mentioned earlier where it's like a good bad book.

00;35;13;13 - 00;35;23;15
Dylan
The, the, the writing itself is like a I hope this does not sound too mean when I say it out loud because like the, the, the.

00;35;23;22 - 00;35;24;09
Kevin
Show word.

00;35;24;09 - 00;35;46;15
Dylan
Again, I really do if he ever sees this like I respect someone who's willing for I don't care if it's like if it's scary or if you think it's actually a good idea. But if it's that or if it's just naivete thinking you're going to be able to make something good like from it. I respect anyone who has the chutzpah to actually just take a video game and like Beat four beat, make that into the book.

00;35;46;15 - 00;36;03;19
Dylan
You know what I mean? When it's like this super, super simple, like whatever the book is not it's the mean thing that was potentially going to say is that there's this I need to send this to you guys. Actually, I think you'd both love it. My good friend Tyler wrote a short story when we were in, like, third grade.

00;36;05;18 - 00;36;12;04
Dylan
It's called Intro Dimension, and it is like a third graders conception of, like, a spy thriller.

00;36;12;05 - 00;36;12;18
Kevin
Right?

00;36;13;14 - 00;36;35;12
Dylan
Replete with, like, both, you know, a third graders understand of the concepts that it attempts to explore. That part's not really analogous to hear the parts of that. It's analogous. It's a third graders kind of like grammar, like in writing. That's what I'm afraid might be too mean. It's just it's like so much of the book, and this is not even the content.

00;36;35;12 - 00;36;46;22
Dylan
So it's like, you know, it almost I'm almost me and just it's for, you know, who even evaluate something necessarily on the grammar, like on how it's like written, written. But it is, it's funny and fun, you know. I mean, like there's so many.

00;36;46;22 - 00;36;46;28
Phil
Like.

00;36;47;09 - 00;37;04;21
Dylan
The, like just some of these lines, like the one that I read or like some of the. Oh, no, I actually I saved one. That is the perfect kind of encapsulation of what I'm talking about. Give me 2 seconds to bring it up here. If this is not demonstrated, it was just so reminiscent of this. But and we love this book.

00;37;04;21 - 00;37;28;09
Dylan
We want to like, edit it and make, like, a little fun thing. Not the gold, Max. My friend's book, it's just got so many funny phrase sentences that just make you giggle like when you hear it, right? So like, here's one from Goldman Sachs. And there are many like this where it says who or whatever was holding the Goldman Sachs still ruled area and was still evil.

00;37;28;09 - 00;37;28;29
Dylan
Yeah, that's like.

00;37;29;29 - 00;37;52;27
Dylan
When he realized there's like another big bad behind the door, right? That's like what it says. There's just like some brilliant. It has like the same energy as like that one half like fanfiction where it's like Gordon Freeman backflipped and shot heads blow just like amazing, like grammar. It's like those sentences from like an SAT question where it asks you how to rearrange it in like the way and it's hard you can.

00;37;53;02 - 00;38;14;00
Dylan
I feel like this book was written in like two sittings. So like, you know, that feeling that you get your, the writers when like you don't realize that you're starting to kind of like repeat sentences and structures and things like that, or you start glossing over shit that you would take in like an hour to kind of explore the details of before like that kind of crisis and see that just made it so funny, like to get through.

00;38;14;12 - 00;38;35;27
Dylan
And then yeah, beyond that, you know, it's just like I've never read a book that so clearly was exactly what happens in a video game. Yeah. I mean, yeah, and like a simple video game and there's like these little we didn't get a chance, like, talk about it, but I didn't remember like where they were of a Kevin and I were talking about it before, like before we started recording.

00;38;36;10 - 00;39;12;23
Dylan
There's some bits where like the author tries to reference like makes like these cheeky references to like, like one of them like remarked on how there were two houses that both had the number like 1370 like the address 1370 which is very clearly like him trying to make a joke about how the background are probably you repeated it like in the game or like there's parts where of course when he's describing every little thing that happens with the battle's like, you know, presumably there's some part where there's an exploit where you can like sit there and like kind of chop at people's feet and like it's a part of the game where they can't hit

00;39;12;23 - 00;39;15;15
Dylan
you back. He puts the shit in the book, you know what I mean?

00;39;15;15 - 00;39;17;29
Dylan
Yeah, it's like, how.

00;39;17;29 - 00;39;22;00
Kevin
Do you go through that hidden as an outline or a short story.

00;39;22;00 - 00;39;40;04
Dylan
Novel? Yes. And I just I've never maybe I'm just, you know, not in the game. You guys maybe experience evidently experience this kind of thing where often. But I've never read a book that was like that. And that just made it this really fun experience. And of course, you know, our read It's Not Dead, it's this other one that that makes you sit there.

00;39;40;04 - 00;39;45;17
Kevin
Yeah. It, it comes with the territory as. Yeah. To that. Sure.

00;39;46;01 - 00;39;47;12
Phil
Well we enjoy our world. Yeah.

00;39;47;22 - 00;39;48;28
Dylan
I guess I need to go and.

00;39;48;28 - 00;39;49;25
Kevin
Found ourselves.

00;39;49;26 - 00;39;50;09
Dylan
Other ones.

00;39;50;24 - 00;40;01;28
Kevin
Yeah. Yeah. We have found ourselves in a, in a very particular niche and yeah we, that's, that's just, that's just a lot of these books.

00;40;02;01 - 00;40;02;14
Dylan
Well.

00;40;02;27 - 00;40;18;13
Dylan
I was going to ask Kevin, obviously we still got to hear your thoughts on the book overall. But when you guys said so those you're ranking, the ones that were probably the biggest stinkers, what would you say is the best? I'm sorry. If you get this question a lot, what we say is the best one that you guys have read thus far.

00;40;19;07 - 00;40;20;15
Phil
Oh, yeah. Yeah.

00;40;20;15 - 00;40;27;08
Kevin
That's that's a hard question. That that is a harder question. I think I had a stronger answer last year.

00;40;27;19 - 00;40;28;04
Phil
Yeah.

00;40;28;29 - 00;40;35;10
Kevin
But I think so. I think Halo the fall of reach sure is, is probably not.

00;40;35;12 - 00;40;37;00
Dylan
Was going to guess I was going to guess.

00;40;37;00 - 00;40;50;19
Kevin
Is is probably number one really good but also if we're just talking about the general stratosphere you have Halo the fall of reach you have far cry absolution.

00;40;50;25 - 00;40;52;09
Phil
I had on this.

00;40;52;10 - 00;40;53;07
Dylan
Interesting.

00;40;53;16 - 00;41;00;21
Kevin
Yeah yeah. And probably BioShock Rapture.

00;41;00;29 - 00;41;01;17
Phil
That's what I was.

00;41;02;11 - 00;41;03;00
Kevin
Is up there.

00;41;03;00 - 00;41;07;27
Dylan
As I remember when I watched some of the clips from that one tier. I remember you guys are posting it. Yeah. Okay.

00;41;08;18 - 00;41;12;08
Phil
Yeah, yeah. I think those are my top three as well. That's easily.

00;41;12;22 - 00;41;27;28
Kevin
Yeah. They're up there. What I thought of the book was it was it happens and the words they appeared in front of me and I read them, read them and I, I took notes on them.

00;41;28;08 - 00;41;29;16
Phil
You read the shit out of them.

00;41;29;19 - 00;41;32;22
Kevin
I, I read the shit out of those where it really.

00;41;33;02 - 00;41;35;10
Dylan
Like I want to read Ken's notes for the other books too.

00;41;36;20 - 00;41;44;23
Kevin
I only started taking notes recently, which is yeah, this is all you know.

00;41;44;23 - 00;41;52;12
Dylan
Oh wow. You know, you guys are a good deal like a patriot. And you can add that on there like your guys notes as you read it. Yeah, it's like a reader bonus. That would be I've.

00;41;52;24 - 00;42;00;07
Phil
Got a I've got one of these. Hold on. Let me see. Oh yeah. Yeah. This is the first one. This is the first one. I filled it up. It's this. I love the sticker.

00;42;00;07 - 00;42;02;08
Kevin
Here are the first two.

00;42;02;09 - 00;42;09;28
Dylan
Whatever. Yes. So I said, Kevin, show me a picture of this thing or somehow I like I saw this.

00;42;10;20 - 00;42;11;23
Kevin
You might have posted a link.

00;42;11;23 - 00;42;12;20
Phil
To it on Twitter.

00;42;12;27 - 00;42;13;09
Dylan
That one it.

00;42;13;09 - 00;42;24;18
Phil
Was. Yeah. Yeah. And that was great. Starts out with Resident Evil, the umbrella conspiracy and it's all notes. And the last one.

00;42;24;18 - 00;42;25;09
Dylan
Damn dude.

00;42;25;23 - 00;42;33;00
Phil
Was on and oh this is this is a ninja. You got.

00;42;33;23 - 00;42;34;03
Dylan
Nice.

00;42;34;03 - 00;42;35;01
Kevin
Oh, there you go.

00;42;35;06 - 00;42;58;23
Dylan
That would actually be like a real stuff. I imagine if you know, I imagine like a lot of your viewers to like would be probably like interested either writers themselves are interested in writing. So having you as someone who literally sells stories like two for a living, getting your notes on, like it's like, you know, so the how like game developers will do their like postmortems and like I always wonder what's in those and like I know that a lot.

00;42;58;23 - 00;43;08;19
Dylan
Like I can't, I wouldn't like necessarily give these out because, you know, your personal notes, you would maybe. Yeah, yeah. But that damn, that would be like a cool supplement to have.

00;43;08;19 - 00;43;13;06
Phil
That's up. Yeah. Yeah. We have some, we can scan some other ones and stuff like that.

00;43;13;07 - 00;43;29;10
Kevin
That's right. Let's, let's, you know what, let's, let's think about doing that. Yeah, yeah. But you know what else I want you guys to think about? And maybe you shouldn't have to think about it too hard, but what are you playing, Phil? Phil, what are you playing this week?

00;43;29;19 - 00;44;02;19
Phil
Um, I just wrapped up a before my computer died today. Thankfully, I did. I did keep up with the point nine update for vampire survivors and keep my perfect score on achievements. Very pleased with that. It's impressive. I did wrap up and I'm still playing. I still like kind of piddling into the newest leisure shoot Larry game school yeah yeah yeah wet dreams don't dry to.

00;44;03;21 - 00;44;04;09
Dylan
Man.

00;44;04;18 - 00;44;17;22
Phil
And it's it's I have a real fondness for these Sue Larry, I, it was one of the first like franchises that I was excited about when I was a kid because it was dirty words. I didn't know you could do that.

00;44;18;25 - 00;44;23;17
Dylan
And funny writing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I met a lot of stuff like that.

00;44;23;28 - 00;44;46;20
Phil
Oh, yeah, yeah. And obviously the old school literature, Larry, has problems in a modern age, but this this German developer picked them up, picked them up a few years back and did a whole kind of reboot. And the and and Wet Dreams Don't Drive was was pretty good actually. It was not stupid dad humor. But that's what you were always going to get from Larry.

00;44;46;28 - 00;44;50;20
Phil
Sure. It wasn't as sexist or.

00;44;50;21 - 00;45;01;15
Dylan
I was going to say, Yeah, yeah, evolution. That's kind of what you would imagine. It's like a leisure suit, Larry, in a modern era would kind of be more wholesome. Yeah, it's maybe cheesy, but, like, it's not like. GROSS Yeah.

00;45;01;16 - 00;45;29;18
Phil
Like, right, right. Yeah, sure. And he's a he is a dirt bag and he's and he's trying to get laid and everything like that. But there's also kind of a they've developed on to have kind of more sweet or virginal, almost sort of feel to them. And it's, you know, they've taken care of. In the first one, there was a situation where you end up actually helping two gay men get together and, like really working hard to make sure these two men fall in love.

00;45;29;18 - 00;45;39;19
Phil
And it's kind of cute, actually. And now I haven't gone far into this one, but I'm not sure we might be backsliding a little bit.

00;45;40;12 - 00;45;41;10
Dylan
Oh, no.

00;45;41;10 - 00;45;58;03
Phil
We've got we got an Asian character who is like just on the cusp of a voice that maybe is not a great thing. And I'd love to just say that. Well, you know, maybe the Germans don't get it, but we all know they absolutely do.

00;45;59;04 - 00;46;03;28
Dylan
So.

00;46;03;28 - 00;46;15;00
Phil
So I've been wanting more of that. Yeah. And, and I've been playing a little more of a of a rabbit scenes, which is the Sweeney Todd video game center.

00;46;15;01 - 00;46;16;29
Kevin
That's the Sweeney Todd a game. Yeah.

00;46;16;29 - 00;46;18;17
Dylan
Interesting. I've not even heard of that.

00;46;18;22 - 00;46;20;22
Phil
You play you're familiar with Sweeney Todd?

00;46;20;29 - 00;46;26;13
Dylan
Yes. Yes. You play in so far as I've seen the movie. Yeah.

00;46;27;04 - 00;46;58;01
Phil
You you you play a couple. And one of them, instead of being a barber, is a tailor and and the other one is a baker and she has a restaurant downstairs. And on the top you have a, you know, a tailor and clothes store. And people come in. And while you're measuring them, you slit their throats, you take their clothes, you throw them down a chute, and you control both the characters and you have to swap between them and the wife will take the bodies, grind them up, make them into pies or sausages.

00;46;58;14 - 00;47;10;04
Phil
You can upgrade them and make make better pastries. While doing that, you make soups and new clothes out of the old clothes and you're just going back and forth. It's actually pretty high stress.

00;47;11;00 - 00;47;18;21
Dylan
Oh yeah, it sounds like it. And you kind of control system also the idea of like cannibalizing their clothes as well in addition to like their literal bodies.

00;47;18;21 - 00;47;42;20
Phil
It's exactly. Exactly. And you can and you start getting letters from some mysterious stranger who seems to know and is blackmailing you. And so you're trying to and you're and you're also upgrading both the restaurant and the tailor shop as you go. And, you know, and it's it's got this funny strategy simulation feel to it. It's gruesome and very silly and fun.

00;47;43;02 - 00;47;48;28
Phil
And it's five bucks. It's sure it's pretty good. It's not bringing the house down, but fuck, I'm really enjoying it.

00;47;49;13 - 00;47;51;17
Dylan
So. Yeah, no kidding. Especially for five bucks. That's right.

00;47;51;17 - 00;47;56;00
Kevin
Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right, Dylan, what are you playing?

00;47;56;27 - 00;47;57;25
Dylan
I have been playing.

00;47;57;25 - 00;48;00;09
Kevin
I other than your own. Your own mod? Yeah.

00;48;01;10 - 00;48;17;23
Dylan
I play that a whole lot. If you call it playing. I do a lot of play testing. I have been playing it. So we had a really stacked like couple of months, right, where it was just kind of like post COVID wedding. So I almost didn't get to play like much at all, but I have been still picking away at Elden Ring.

00;48;17;23 - 00;48;44;14
Dylan
I'm, you know, like, I got to play it more this week. I get, like, you know, pretty hefty sessions and like once every so often. So I'm, I think coming up on the end of Elden Ring and that's been really fun. Of course if you like, you know Souls games not like I need to evangelize Elden ring Elden ring to people who it's like generally speaking you're probably if you like that kind of game, you've already beaten it like three times the amount it's taken me to get through my like first place or yeah.

00;48;44;23 - 00;48;46;21
Kevin
I've put in probably 250.

00;48;46;21 - 00;48;47;22
Dylan
Hours nice.

00;48;48;12 - 00;48;49;25
Kevin
Into it in total.

00;48;50;11 - 00;49;09;22
Dylan
Nice deal. It's, it's really fucking good man. I was like, that's how I felt thus far. Like, I've really enjoyed it a lot. And then I've been playing today, actually, I got to play like a three hour session of the original battlefront, two with a couple of friends, like not the one that just came out, but like the back of the day.

00;49;10;00 - 00;49;11;27
Kevin
The original battlefront two.

00;49;11;27 - 00;49;37;09
Dylan
Yes. Which also like man, I really wish that they would have named the Reboot's like something a little bit different because we're trying to like search for like fixes and stuff is like an old game and like it's really hard when the new ones also called Battlefront two. Yeah, but like, yeah, those games were so good. I'm like, you know, the newest ones like, they're cool too, but they're not like, they're like those things really.

00;49;37;15 - 00;50;03;04
Dylan
Like the new ones are these, you know, like highly kind of like cinematic. Like I would say that, you know, mechanically they might be a little bit tighter in some ways even. That's such a vague like expressions, almost meaningless. We'd have to, you know, we'll do like a whole dissertation, but like, damn it, if those original Battlefront games are not like real sandbox, you know what I mean?

00;50;03;04 - 00;50;22;09
Dylan
Like, where you can just kind of like they're like, massive, they're open. You have a million different vehicles to play with. You have a million different unit types to play with. You can adjust like every little bit about like how it plays and like what, you know, the sandbox is filled with like the enemy. I it's never great, right?

00;50;22;09 - 00;50;38;28
Dylan
But like, you can make them, like, pretty dangerous. And just like, I don't know, like so many of the different, like the sheer volume of content of course, because games back then didn't require quite the level of like, you know, ultra quadruple AA powers that some like the battlefront two reboot has.

00;50;38;28 - 00;50;39;22
Kevin
Right right.

00;50;39;23 - 00;50;55;16
Dylan
It's like so much content and like I've seen it, we were by the end of it, it was like, damn, the issue that we're having is that one of our friends lives in London and or not London, sorry, in England. And so the lag is a problem because so many of these old games don't have like dedicated servers or anything.

00;50;55;20 - 00;50;56;22
Kevin
Right. Right. Yeah.

00;50;57;06 - 00;50;59;07
Dylan
So it's also, you know, preservationist.

00;50;59;07 - 00;51;05;11
Kevin
Somebody's server is running it in California and that's really the only place you can connect.

00;51;06;02 - 00;51;15;07
Dylan
It's either we do that or direct connect where, you know, either me and my friend who live here, it's good for us and shit for our English friend or it's the.

00;51;15;07 - 00;51;19;13
Kevin
Reverse, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was rather nice, Kevin.

00;51;19;14 - 00;51;21;00
Dylan
Nice, my boy.

00;51;21;14 - 00;51;28;28
Kevin
What am I play? And, uh, I. So I am. I also caught up on vampire survivors. That's.

00;51;28;28 - 00;51;36;18
Dylan
Yeah, I see that you fell on. Steam's pop up. Yes. Boot camp for survivors of vampire survivors.

00;51;36;18 - 00;52;02;17
Kevin
Just like running for hours. I also started playing. I'm on a kick where I'm just. I'm trying not to buy new games as much. I'm trying to, like, go through and and beat games that I owned that I never, never bothered beating or whatever. Get some achievements, all that fun stuff. So not only am I back on XCOM two, I'm back on Loop Hero.

00;52;03;00 - 00;52;35;09
Kevin
Oh, Nero. Yeah, yeah. Because I needed I never finished the loop here. I finish it now. Wow I need to finish. And I broke my own rule. I broke my rule of not buying a new game because I bought the kitty cat game of stray and I was yesterday is it's oh I love stray it's a fun game and I texted Phil if somebody asked me if Stray is good game, I would say yes, definitely.

00;52;35;16 - 00;52;50;21
Kevin
If somebody asked me randomly if Stray was a horror game, I would say yeah sometimes because it does have some real creepy stuff in it. Um, and yeah, so I'm loving.

00;52;50;22 - 00;52;52;19
Dylan
Has like a weirdo vibe or like a yeah.

00;52;52;19 - 00;53;09;24
Kevin
It's, it's in a, it's in a weird yeah, it's in a weird cyberpunk ish dystopia setting. So you're going to get a little weird stuff. It gets, it gets more appropriately, it gets weirder than cyberpunk 2077 ever bothers to. Yeah.

00;53;09;29 - 00;53;14;01
Dylan
So that's fun. Yeah.

00;53;14;01 - 00;53;45;24
Kevin
Yeah. So, you know, try straight if you like, if you like a lot of the stuff that you know and a purna. Yeah, I think that's Annapurna puts out. I would I would definitely, definitely get stray because they, they're, you know, uh, to me they, they, they're as a, as a company that puts out, um, like neat indie games, um, I mean, they publish them.

00;53;45;24 - 00;53;56;14
Kevin
Uh, I feel like with the exception of 12 minutes, which is just a terrible, you know, terrible game, they really haven't missed that much overall.

00;53;56;14 - 00;54;01;08
Dylan
Yeah, sure. Yeah. Someone on the 824 of of publishers.

00;54;01;08 - 00;54;15;04
Kevin
They are they're pretty Annapurna is pretty much the A24 of all the game publishers. I mean God, you know, you have, you have uh, this year, you know, you have both stray and neon white.

00;54;15;04 - 00;54;17;29
Dylan
Which I did not know that they did. Neon white that they publish.

00;54;17;29 - 00;54;41;11
Kevin
Yeah, they publish, they publish neon white which that's a neon white. Occupied my time for a little bit too, but yeah, no, that's, that's what I'm playing. And I, I'm, I think I'm probably like halfway through stray at this point. I don't think it's particularly long because there's an achievement you can get for finishing at under 2 hours.

00;54;41;11 - 00;54;50;19
Kevin
Well and so school of thought I think it's I think it's got a resident evil vibe where if you know what you're doing, you can pretty much sprint through it.

00;54;52;01 - 00;54;52;13
Dylan
Do you guys.

00;54;52;13 - 00;54;56;03
Dylan
Know, does it have a PC for it or is it just pure? What's it called?

00;54;56;04 - 00;55;00;18
Kevin
It's no, it's it's it's on ps5 and windows.

00;55;00;24 - 00;55;04;28
Dylan
Okay. I don't know why I assume that it's only ps5, but I did, so I yeah.

00;55;04;28 - 00;55;09;04
Kevin
I think it's it's a console exclusive. Uh, yeah.

00;55;09;11 - 00;55;10;20
Dylan
To go to.

00;55;10;20 - 00;55;15;02
Kevin
PlayStation, but it is available on the windows.

00;55;15;06 - 00;55;22;05
Dylan
Fuck you. Xbox. Yeah. 22. We're still doing this, baby. Yeah.

00;55;22;14 - 00;55;25;14
Phil
Baby.

00;55;25;14 - 00;55;43;20
Kevin
Yeah. So, so that'll do it for that'll do it for what I was playing and that'll do it for today's episode cord Dillon. Why don't you tell everybody where they can find you and and and what you're working on and all that fun stuff.

00;55;43;20 - 00;56;18;06
Dylan
So you can find my kind of primary project. My meat and Potatoes is a mod pack for Skyrim. It's called Wild Lander. It is basically an attempt to kind of refashion Skyrim into kind of like an immersive sim. It's very heavily inspired by games like Deus Ex can she rim world these kind of very like the world kind of crafts dynamic stories right type of games which Skyrim is like this brilliant canvas for but obviously doesn't quite get there like on its own.

00;56;18;06 - 00;56;20;11
Dylan
So it kind of combines a lot of stuff like that with like.

00;56;20;21 - 00;56;21;07
Kevin
Survival.

00;56;21;07 - 00;56;35;28
Dylan
Elements like role playing elements. There's a lot of things that you can kind of just as an endgame journal where you can talk about all the different stuff that your character's been doing and yadda yadda yadda. You know, I guess you can check that out it wildland or mod XCOM and you know, we have a discord server. I'm on Twitter.

00;56;35;28 - 00;56;56;02
Dylan
It's I think just doing it. Dylan Berry is like my handle and everything except twitch you know weekly I stream development and other random stuff I think that about covers it it's really the only social media that I, I have any sort of like posting presence like Twitter and this subreddit I guess we have a wildlands subreddit. Yeah, that's me.

00;56;56;02 - 00;56;59;10
Dylan
Yeah. Thank you guys so much for having me on. Absolute blast. Oh, I.

00;56;59;10 - 00;57;04;04
Kevin
Really love it. Yeah. We've been wanting to have you on for a while and.

00;57;04;28 - 00;57;08;29
Dylan
What a fantastic title to you to do it. I feel like it's, like, perfect, honest. I have.

00;57;08;29 - 00;57;15;16
Kevin
No. Yeah, I think. I think Gold Max and Skyrim are. Oh, sure. In a way.

00;57;15;21 - 00;57;17;16
Dylan
In some ways, most definitely. Yeah.

00;57;18;00 - 00;57;23;20
Kevin
In some ways, yeah. Yeah. But oh go ahead, finish, finish off.

00;57;23;20 - 00;57;37;03
Dylan
I was, I was going to say that we used to have a, an armor there's a mod called I think this was immersive armor. Is that out of its own little like CONAN the barbarian Easter egg armor that was you know that's nice like a cloth.

00;57;37;29 - 00;57;40;08
Kevin
That's nice like a circle.

00;57;40;17 - 00;57;41;19
Dylan
Has circle of anywhere.

00;57;42;14 - 00;58;16;00
Kevin
